Comments Thread For: Sunny Edwards wonders if the only way to create a level playing field is to stop drug testing

Former IBF flyweight titleholder Sunny Edwards is not sure drug testing in boxing is working and believes the only way of creating a level playing field is to allow the athletes to take anything they choose.

I think he is talking about everyone. Some 25 years ago I was told by a gym owner who was working with many sportspeople like football players, sprinters, boxers that every one is on something (meaning illegal supplements) and that you cannot be competitive these days without it. My guess is Sunny knows more than he is saying - otherwise why would he advocate to stop testing completely. The implication is that majority is juicing anyway, so let everybody do it and have a level paying field.

Bam's half brother has tested positive twice. I can't see brothers not share "What has worked for them"

peds are also dangerous for the athlete themselves i think, not an expert or anything but if u push the boat out u may end up with long term issues when all said and done, keep them out of sports as it may become a race to the bottom, how far are u willing to go to make that cash, some will go all the way to the bottom

Ive been saying this for years.

It would definitely level the playing field.

Right now the top money earners are protected and the standards are applied based on that. Most of the time they dont even tell the opponent until AFTER the fight that their opponent was positive. They will use some excuse of "oh uh we had to wait for B sample results" when really the pressure is there to not cancel the fight because everyone looses money.

Then you can make whatever excuse and appeal you want and if you are more popular aka bigger money earner it will be "oh yeah of course you ate tainted beef, yeah we can avoid a suspension here, yeah keep fighting and earning everyone money"

The number 1 thing we have seen in the sport since around 2000ish is that fighters over 35 have improved dramatically. Its now extremely common after 2000 to have 37-38 year olds as active champions beating down 24 year olds. If you look at the 80s and early 90s this was very rare. Remember how shot guys like Larry Holmes, SRL, Hagler ect were over the age of 35. This is because as a sport the perfected the use of PEDs. People really think they made some kind of dramatic career extending protein shakes in the late 90s to early 2000s are dumbasses.

In the eary to mid 90s you would see a lot of guys that looked like bodybuilders. holyfield, tommy morrison, comeback tyson ect. This is the first wave of PED use in boxing but i believe they were using cycles learned from the body building industry and they got that look. But after they perfected using them for age and stamina.

You cant tell by look anymore who is on PEDs. You got guys like James Toney and Tyson Fury on peds because its for stamina and everything else.

Yep they're dangerous for the athletes too, not only is there numerous dangerous risk involved with the substances themselves.

The human body is nothing if not efficient and it will shut down natural T production if you're regularly take PEDs and in some cases cause irreparable damage to the kidneys, cardiovascular system and various other systems and organs.

One such example is the potential that Vergil Ortiz and his Rhabdo a couple of years back was caused by PEDs which is a life threatening (muscle death and renal (kidney) failure).

But if it wasn't caused by PEDs themself the use of PEDs could cause him to push himself beyond his normal limits causing what is known as exercise-induced rhabdomyolysis.

Now this wasn't even really discussed as a possibility at the time but it should've been considered given the nature of boxing and the propensity of athletes to cheat.

Sunny has a point. I’ve thought this for a long time. Maybe they try it for a while and see what happens. These vada type panels etc aren’t evenly fair or completely consistent IMO. Careers are ruined sometimes. Tough call. But he’s right to bring the subject up for discussion.
