His mother said he was not a gang member or troublemaker, so I wonder what the motive was then. Or if the mother, like some mothers, just didn’t know her son as much as she thought.

Very rarely will a parent paint their child in a negative light.
It was either a mistake of ID or he was somehow caught up in it.
Maybe he thought he was out of the game but the game didn't approve ?
