Comments Thread For: Canelo vs. Crawford? Maybe - but first, Canelo vs. Alalshikh

Money is power. No two men in boxing are currently proving that more conclusively than Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and Turki Alalshikh. If you can attract massive amounts of money, you hold power. Alvarez is about to get a $35 million guarantee to face Edgar Berlanga, a +800 underdog whom I wouldn't see as a value play even if he was a +2000 underdog. Because he brings the money, Canelo can get away with taking a fight he can't realistically lose and still get paid as if it's a superfight.

I can’t get past that first line. Money makes things happen for sure but power? Nah. You can be as wealthy as you want to be but if the people who have the real power want you gone, poof…bye bye

If Crawford wins Saturday and Canelo wins in September, I have to assume they will fight in May 2025

Turki needs to put his money to good use and make the fight that matter which is Canelo v Benavidez. If he is spending and the fighters don't have to worry about money, then making Crawford v Boots should not be too hard either. These are the fair fights and not all these jumping up 10 different weight class is hogwash.

Turki will surely want to make Canelo-Bud next, its a superfight lot people would pay to watch that.

Only a boxing writer deep inside the oblivious boxing bubble would actually think Canelo has any real power against Turki. The UFC card IS going to eat the Canelo-Berlanga fight alive in terms of PPV buys, gate, etc. Canelo’s ego and mainstream appeal is going to take a huge hit, and the appetite for any more of his low-risk, cherry-picked fights will be all but gone. And if he turns down Turki’s offer for the Crawford fight, Turki will have no problem telling the world how much he offered and make Canelo look bad as a guy who rather take less money to fight bums.

Checkmate, Turki on this one - no matter how boxing writers land Canelo’s sycophants try to spin it otherwise.

This coward should be stripped of all belts for long time ago but the corruption and the $$ don't allow it. I remember when Rigo was stripped of the belts simply because nobody wanted to fight him. Now you have the opposite scenario but Canelo is even "granted" for avoiding the mandatories. If you want more money, that's fine but leave the belts if you don't follow the organizations rules...
