Comments Thread For: As MLB Sets the Record Straight, Boxing Should Shine a Light on Its Overlooked

Given MLB's recent inclusion of Negro League statistics, the moment seems appropriate to identify some of the best fighters whose paths were irrevocably altered by the stormy racial climate of their times.

I worked with a descendant of Sam Langford , she was very proud of that and really surprised that I knew about him.

She was 100% correct to be as proud as she could possibly be about her relative who was one of the greatest fighters who ever lived.
When I say one of the greatest fighters, I mean bar none, he beat a who's who of other great champions, and he did it while still very young.
He fought anybody, and everybody who was willing to face him, giving up considerable advantages in height, weight, but rarely if ever reach, or power.
He could've beaten anyone during his heyday, but he was avoided by some of the other so called champions of the day, because they knew what they were in for.
One last thing about this incredibly gifted fighter, he wouldn't have had so many losses if he hadn't been legally blind towards the end of his career.
Along with Charley Burly, Sam Lanford are black fighters who I wished could've been given the opportunity to have fought for the world title.
Although Langford did get a shot against Joe Gans for the lightweight championship, but he missed making weight, and even though he thumped Joe Gans, he couldn't claim the title.
He also got a shot Joe Walcott's welterweight championship belt, and from most accounts he decision'd Barbados Joe, the official decision was that the bout was a draw.
Sam Langford is the greatest fighter who ever lived, that never won a world championship.
If it wasn't one thing it was another that kept him from becoming a world champion.
I'm tired of seeing, or reading about people getting cheated out of what they've rightfully earned, or won.

In regards to your traitorous bastard remark, I'd rather see him in prison.
Where he would have nothing but time to pay for all of the crimes that he's committed in his lifetime.
I can't stand that pea**** strutting around like a rooster, when he's really a chicken to the core.
His comeuppance is way overdue, and it appears that his fate is finally catching up to him, and the rest of his clan.

It's disheartening to read about just how pervasive, and rampant racism was back in those days.
To see it rearing it's ugly head around again is down right infuriating, and we have to stand up against it's growing revival!

GB4LIFE: Josh Gibson played the race card and that's why he first on the batting list. He didn't earn it!

Pac=Duran: Ty Cobb is a God fearing Christian American hero who was mistakenly called a ray-ciss. Him and his friends only wore white sheets around d the fires to make it easier to see who was next in the pig fuqing contest. It's hard to see at night in the woods!

Imagine being a professional boxer & fighting for a world title whilst having tuberculosis. Or fighting whilst clinically blind. Or fighting the same guy 22 times.
