Comments Thread For: Family Guy Deontay Wilder on the Brink of Another Championship Run or Retirement

Life seemed simpler for Deontay Wilder 16 years ago. He was an unexpected bronze medallist at the Beijing Olympics and turned pro as the "Bronze Bomber" to give his daughter a better life.

Man wild that he thinks of himself the hardest puncher in history, he doesn't even have the best right hand in history he has no variation on the thing it's the straight right or bust.

The delusional on the man is incredible I understand boxers have to have some degree of delusion but Wilder and his BF Scott take it to a whole new level...

With things like this and "Wilder is 10x the boxer Ali was and went through more struggle than Ali" - if they aren't trolling I feel sorry for them.

His overall story should be endearing to people, fighting for his disabled daughter, quick turn around, medalist and only Heavyweight champion from America since Shannon "The Cannon" Briggs, he should be a star.

But when he opens his mouth with his abysmal education and seemingly random tangential diatribes and the prolonged low level of competition (up until recent years) has let him down big time.

He'll probably retire if Zhang spalts in him like 4-6 rounds come saturday i'd imagine.

But it seemed like Turki doesn't really care if Wilder loses as long as he performs well, which might just give him enough motivation to show up properly and give him the win.

Once wilder loses to zhang, there's no need f or retirement. Josh would still fight him, and barrel millar.
I want wilder to ko someone with iron chin before he retires.

the odds of a K. O. are in both man's corner's this weekend. That is corner not coroner although Wilder does talk about the undertaker from time to time........it still seems like any mans fight at this point but that will be determined inside the ropes to me it is an interesting fight. They both have power they both have gotten old and gotten beaten and kept on getting older in the process and lost some of what got them to this point. All the rest is just someone else's idea of what the fight means or how it will land. Hope they beat the hell out of each other would like to see lots a blood and knock downs and drunken stupors as they recover in the middle of the ring. Why not that is what the people want to see from these two guys and neither has much of a choice then to **** it out in the end anyhow........

went from PBC talking like he was top 10 hw all time. to entering the real world and not even close to being a hall of famer. that is what I would tell Wilder for this fight. some reality

He is an incredible story. It's incredible what you can do if you're a US Heavyweight with the right backing.

His one trick is good but any kind of opposition would have meant his career was nothing. As it is he's had a career that most can only dream of.

I do feel a bit more positive towards him nowadays. He was good fun in a pretty decent little period for the heavyweights. I'm so torn between wanting to see his reputation relegated to where it deserves to be based on talent, and wanting to finally see him go out with a big event against Joshua.

On balance, I'm hoping he can do it. A big plodding heavyweight should be made for him - but he didn't face many guys who were half decent. Zhang is half decent.

I started to like Wilder the person when I saw the video of some jerk taunting him about his daughter and then getting the crap beaten out of him by Wilder. I knew he had a good heart. Yeah he's faded badly and all the rest of it, but he's my sentimental favorite to sleep Zhang with a big right hand.

I do not see Wilder going for another (successful) championship run.

AJ has had 3-4 fights with mediocre or below-average fighters in a row after the 2nd Usyk defeat, and only now looks to have regained his confidence. And he did that averaging 3 fights per year.

Imagine if AJ's fight against Jermaine were instead against Zhang, what do you think would have happened?

If Wilder were serious about a run at the belts again, he (or his team) would have had a similar journey back and would have been a lot more active before taking Zhang (even if they underestimated Parker). I think Wilder had mentally retired until he saw an opportunity to make Saudi money before finally sailing into the sunset. That is the motivation behind this and the Parker fights and such a motivation cannot get him the belts back. I would be surprised if we see the older, aggressive Wilder on Saturday. He might get lucky, clip a stationary Zhang, and win, but he won't fight with confidence in this fight.

Turki and the Saudis literrally saved boxing. It has been such an exciting
couple of years because of it. The saturday card is fantastic. So many good fights we
had, and plenty to come. Incredible.

I'm picking Wilder by brutal KO. Early. I believe the Parker loss was a wake up call and a blessing in disguise. He hasn't stopped training since it happened and he is fine tuned for not only a glorious run, but an active one.
