I never trained at Kronk, I was asked to join the Kronk team doe. I was taken to Myrtle Beach by the Kronk PR guy when I was 15. I was to be a sparring partner for his step son, who had won a national. That PR guy was a riot, I have never laughed so hard, so many times in a week before or after.
I did go down one time after I had retired. I show up, ask if I could get some work and this guy, Walter, just starts hollerin' at me. I'm standing there like wtf? Marlon Thomas comes over and says something like "No Walter, he's one of us..." Marlon used to come to our gym with Kady King and his brother Darrin. All of those guys were great in my eyes. Marlon and I would regularly spar, he was really good. Kady would always give me a few rounds, but he obviously took it easy on me, I was only 15 or 16 at the time and he was heavier by 50lbs. And his brother Darrin Morris, I never sparred him until I had turned pro, was funkin' awesome. It seems that I knew those guys from near the beginning of my time in the ams.
So Marlon gets Walter to relax abit and I get warmed up and gloved to step in with some guy. It could have been Ronald Hearns, but I'm not sure. But anyway, we get working and I rolled a shot and shot one right back, it landed solid like. So he starts straight out coming for me. I end up backing up hurriedly to the ropes, looking for the bottom rope to hit my leg, my foot slides on the tiles of the city gym, I'm like wtf as I fall to one knee. The guy cracks me a good one to my skull. It was a very small apron on that ring with very loose ropes. Maybe that's why Kronk fighters were rarely seen with their backs on the ropes.
I do a few rounds on the bag and then go change up. As I'm leaving Marlon comes over puts his arm around me and yells to the gym, we see you tomorrow and we do this again. Marlon was great.
I did a round at Kronk, but never really trained there........................Rockin'
