Explain how a more than 2 year wait (6 for this one) isn’t considered a duck or aging someone out all of a sudden

Explain how a 39 year old is all of a sudden a good matchup when for years we kept hearing how +35 year olds are past it, old, retirement bound. Just last year we kept hearing and are still hearing how fighting a 40 year old was the most terrible matchup ever. Is there going to be a huge gap between a 39 1/2 year old vs a 40 year old?
