Comments Thread For: Derrick James: Key To Beating Crawford Is To Chop, Chop, Chop Him Down

By Manouk Akopyan - Both Errol Spence Jr. and trainer Derrick James realize that in order to eliminate Terence Crawford in the undisputed welterweight title tilt on July 29, an arduous axing job must ensue.

    Good plan!
However, this is Bud Crawford you're trying to chop down.
He's not gonna just stand there and let you chop away.
Besides, you'll have other things to worry about; he's gonna be throwing flaming chainsaws at you.
    good luck, Chopper!

Spence’s camp has to be ready with excessive holding by Crawford. Not saying that is his style. But between the two, if someone holds too much, I expect it to be Crawford. He did that a bit against Porter while Spence fought cleanly.

        Spence did that also.

Crawford mobility cannot be compared with Danny Garcia or Ugas who stood flat footed at the centre of the ring for Spence to chop down. Crawford will use space and measure his distance to avoid this chop down strategy.

Clinching is also a form of defense.

Seriously last time he fought an opponent with fast feet was porter and he struggled in that fight. Had to really grind it out to get the win

Well, I think Crawford probably has the faster feet and faster hands, but Spence has more power and he has a pretty good body attack and a powerful jab. I think if Spence can wear him down in the later rds, I think he’ll take it. Because of Spence’s consistency, I can see Crawford winning early, and Spence winning late.

A flaming chainsaw can't really hurt you. You have to press it against the flesh, not throw it. And fire can't catch the skin on a quick touch.
