Pacquiao has already lost, and they don't build his marketability on never tasting defeat, unlike some other fighters.
His marketability is built around his humble persona, and his fight style.
Floyd's marketability is based on his unblemished record, and his big mouth. When Floyd loses (if he ever does, considering he carefully picks his opponents to avoid this)...his whole mystique will be gone.
A great fighter indeed, but never dared to be great by taking the risks necessary.
So, if he loses a highly, highly publicized fight against Mayweather, he would take a marketability hit. Except for the inevitable rematch, of course. In which case, he would take a purse split hit.. no?

Most of the public knows about and saw his loss to Erik Morales...then saw how he came back and avenged the loss with two knockout victories.
His vulnerability is part of the reason why people love him so much. People can relate to vulnerability.
To answer your question...the fact that Manny would be moving up in weight to fight a bigger fighter, in a division in which physically he is outmatched, then he loses nothing, even in defeat.
That is one of the benefits of moving up in weight, and taking on bigger challenges.
The downside of fighting a guy coming up is obvious: You win, you just beat a smaller guy...you lose...you just lost to a smaller guy
