"The Mind Here is on Pacquiao", - Joe Santiago

By Antolin Maldonado Rios / arios@elnuevodia.com

Manny Pacquiao who has not started formal preparation for his commitment on November 14 in Las Vegas is something the coach of world champion Miguel Cotto put into question, while said yesterday that eight weeks anyway, is enough in the case of the Filipino.

Joe Santiago, who met with Cotto in the gym as soon as they got off the plane on Tuesday at the conclusion of the promotional tour for the weekend that included stops in Puerto Rico and three other U.S. cities, said that during the trip the Champion never stopped going to the gym, much less when they steped in boricua soil.

"What we're doing is the floor work. In the little time that remains here, everything is mitts work, speed bag and jump rope. Miguel is the boxer that the more mitts work he do, the more he refines his punching technique and is a job that suits him, "said the coach, who recalled that the group will leave the country again tomorrow, this time heading to Tampa, Florida, where he will make the last stage of training before moving to Las Vegas, Nevada the week before the fight.

"The mind here is Pacquiao," Joe replied without hesitation when asked what is going through the minds of Cotto and his corner, because they didnt even stop traning Tuesday when the champion came in, close to 10:30 in the morning at Luis Muñoz Marín Airport after a long journey from California.

"You have to beat the man. I accepted that challenge and we will go out the with a victory. No time to rest. "

In that sense, Santiago does not believe such a thing as that Pacquiao has not started his training and is still resting.

He clarified that even though Cotto finished training longer than the Filipino, it does not mean it will be overtrained, it's why there are ripples on the workload according to how they have programmed into their training plan.

So, he said, it is very important the communication between the athlete and coach.

"At this stage it is emphasizing the physical work of Phil Landman (trainer), without neglecting the technical part. Since arriving in Tampa, we will work in the other way.

In the case of Pacquiao, the circumstances are other according to Santiago.

"Two months is enough time for Manny Pacquiao. He is not a 140 or 147 pounds. He is a 130 and it was evident at the conference when compared with the physique of Miguel Cotto. I think eight weeks is sufficient because he doesnt have to worry about weight. We are aware that they have enough time, but we will not eat the story that is totally passive rest.

Santiago said that once in Tampa, the strong part of the preparation will begin on Monday 21 September with sparring with several left-handed fighters

"They will be left-handed and short, and agressive like Pacquiao."

Miguel Cotto, father, meanwhile, said he also dont believed the story that Pacquiao has not started their preparation.

"If true, good for us. I understand that he aint a natural welterweight, but we will not sleep in the straw. We will prepare for a welterweight, "said Cotto, the father, who manages the affairs of his son.

this 2 months of training is just being exaggerated a lot...

even if cotto started training 10 years before the fight, it doesnt mean that pac will going to match that 10 years..

pac always train for just 2 months, max is 10 weeks i believe. i dont know why this is being emphasize so much..

and one more thing, the one who needs to shed some pounds is cotto so he really needs to start early.

Santiago still believes pac is a 130 lber. mutha****ers are always dogging me about the weight, that its not that much... but even Santiago admits that Pac is a small dude compared to cotto.

Why is everything weight with you? Are you overweight or something!? Pac and his team signed the fight at 145lbs. They already knew that Cotto would come in heavier than Pac. Why are you the only one always complaining about it!?

Yes, but Pac needs to work on his strength, and game plan, he will start traning officially Spetember 21. thats only 7 weeks, and if he is believing the yope, and he thinks he will steamroll Cotto he will get a rude awakening!!!!!
