i dont agree with russias invasion no matter what the reasons, russia can take its paranoia somewhere else, the eu wants a stable trading partner in russia not some loons like ***** who bleed the country dry while harking back to ussr, its dead for a reason, ukraine wanted out and wants to join eu, deal with it russia, its not a threat either, just moving on to a better life like poland latvia lithuania

Little strokes fell big oaks. Firstly, the true effect of the sanctions will be seen closer to the end of the year. Secondly, no, banning 2 Russian athletes will not do anything. But at some point people might start questions in Russia: why don't we have almost anything from car parts to tampons? Why is Russia banned out of everywhere? Why can't we even watch Western movies in the movie theater? Why is everyone hates our government? This is the intended effect of ostracizing Russia. Will it work? I don't know. But, as you pointed out, we need to feel better about themselves.

Generally, Im not sure I fully agree with Klitschko here wrt Bivol or any Russian athlete. Klitschko is speaking out of emotion. Understandably. But it's not completely devoid of rationale as I described above.

I'm Russian, btw. I don't live there for many years now, but I kept up to date with what's been going on there since ***** came to power. And now Russia has become a ******* state. Which direction it took many years ago. Remember that in 1936 there were Olympics in Germany. No, they didn't cause WW2. But they legitimized Hitler and empowered him to think that what he was planning to do will also be supported by the world. Does this remind you what happened in Crimea following Russian Olympics in 2014? The world imposed some half ass sanctions, but largely ignored it. Then in 2022 ***** went all in. If he isn't stopped now, he might go even further. So, yeah, Russia needs to feel it's been ostracized. Any means would do.
Well good discussing this. I've followed geopolitics since the mid seventies. As I see, the majority of the Russian people are behind *****. They can see/feel the shortages but they have been told that the 'bad' West is to blame [which it is in this instance - via sanctions] but they are probably unaware of how much money has been siphoned off by corruption over the decades - money that if it was spent inside Russia would see the Russian people have a standard of living similar to ours. The sports fans over there probably will take pride in Bivol if he wins or any sports player/team - I wouldn't begrudge them that small pleasure at all. As you say, what will change the mood against this special operation will be coffins of their sons coming home and a much deteriorated quality of life - but then I hear that if ***** is overthrown he'll be replaced by someone even more hardline and aggressive.

ukraine is the most corrupt and deprived country in Europe so obviously you have no idea what’s really going on in ukraine , it’s being bled dry by western politicians and oligarchs and has been for years.
as for the conflict Russia warned ukraine was a red line to western powers and nato and they didn’t listen....now we are witnessing the destruction of ukraine as functioning country.
            well done.

ukraine reneged on the Minsk 1 and 2 agreements which was both signed on and Russia don’t bluff and now its carrying out its promise

you don’t bark at someone’s door without having consequences.

            Thats a fact of life

I don't think Iraq/Afghanistan was as bad as Vietnam, but we can find something there too. And I'm not going back to 1812. There are plenty of Vietnam vets still alive. Perfectly appropriate example.

Likewise. It's not often a conversation here doesn't descend into personal **** throwing after a first response.

About these polls. I've seen up to 82% of alleged support. To me this is a rating of fear, hardly a genuine support. Generally, sociology doesn't work in totalitarian countries. Secondly, they support what they see on TV, where Bucha is fake and where Russian soldiers give away humanitarian aid to poor Ukrainians oppressed by **** Zelensky. What's there not to support, right? Russia had opposition media (i.e. real journalism, but, sadly, that means opposition in Russia) - all of these outlets (which had a limited coverage to begin with) were shut down. Most of those who support ***** are 50+ and TV consumers. Younger and educated generally don't support *****.

Largely, people know about corruption very well in Russia - chances are they bribed someone in their lives at one point or another. So, they can extrapolate on those at the top in power. Plus Navalny's investigations were very popular among younger Russians.

I agree that there is nothing wrong with Russians feeling pride if Bivol wins. By all means. And he hasn't said anything in support of Russia wrt war in Ukraine, so personally wrt him I don't think he should be banned. But if we talk about Olympics level events - I have no issues with Russia being banned in any capacity. Individual determination in other sport events would be appropriate, but major world championships/Olympics are very strongly associated with a country represented by athletes.

I wish the coffins to change the mood in Russia on a large scale, but I won't hold my breath. I've seen enough evidence of how parents who live in Russia don't believe their own children living in Ukraine and describing the atrocities Russia does in Ukraine. Russia may not be able to create a phone, laptop or a car worth a ***, but when it comes to brainwashing - hands down, one of the best ever. With 70 years of Soviet experience + 20 under ***** - that's encyclopedia-level of knowledge and experience of how to morally corrupt people to a point that they deny reality right before their very eyes. I don't have a good prognosis for Russia under *****, it's all very pessimistic.

Oh good, Russian trolls here. What you said repeated word to word Russian propaganda. Yes, including " and they didn't listen" - practically *****'s quote. Earned your 11.50 rubles? Or whatever the going rate per post is these days..
