SERGIO MORA AUDIO/VIDEO INTERVIEW (CLICK HERE TO LISTEN)
Good day fight fans! It was my privilege to catch up with former WBC junior middleweight champion Sergio "The Latin Snake" Mora to get some updates on his career and ask his opinions about the biggest fights in the horizon like Mayweather-Marquez and Pacquiao-Cotto.
Mora who was scheduled and has a signed contract to fight Kelly Pavlik a few months back is in somewhat of a standstill in his career after Pavlik pulled out of the fight due to what the Pavlik camp claims as a staph infection only to come back and announce he will be fighting Paul Williams.
Mora also discussed his current career situation outside of the Pavlik mess. He has had some problems with his promoters for their inability to get him a fight since losing his belt to Vernon Forrest in their rematch around this time last year. Mora announced in the interview that he is officially a free agent on the day I interviewed him and was finally able to get out of his contract which he received from winning The Contender show.
"They were the best, and the worst thing that happened in my career. They were the best because when I was nobody they gave me the opportunity, they opened doors for me, they put money in my pocket and it was all great, but I've been with them five years and two of those five years I was inactive. That's not good as a fighter that's young and in his prime,"
and added,
"I'm not a contender anymore, that's over and done with. I'm not a contender, I'm not part of a contender. I'm a world ranked fighter and I'm an ex-junior middleweight champion. Now its time for me to be the future middleweight champion and I'm going to wipe out that middleweight division because I know that I can."
Mora shared to me that he has spoken with Golden Boy promotions last week and will be sitting down this week with Top Rank regarding a fight contract.
Mora is still only 29-years-old and still has a lot of upside. He is also the most exciting fighter to ever come out of The Contender show and just last year when the fight between Manny Pacquiao and Oscar De la Hoya was in limbo, Mora was being discussed as the second option by the Golden Boy camp. And Mora is definitely capable of beating De la Hoya especially the version of De la Hoya in his retirement fight.
Mora incidentally won and lost his WBC junior middleweight belt to the late Vernon Forrest. Mora paid tribute to Forrest and told me what made him a great fighter. "I hope Vernon is watching over me" he said.
Listen in to the two-part interview I posted by clicking the link below and hear everything "The Latin Snake" and I talked about. Mora is definitely one of the most articulate fighters I've interviewed and the depth of his breakdown and analysis on the Mayweather-Marquez fight and the Pacquiao-Cotto match-up should not be missed.
