Comments Thread For: Jake Paul: 'I'll Be Here for a While, People Better Get Used to Me'

The Problem Child apparently has no plans of "ghosting" the world of professional boxing anytime soon. Jake Paul, the social media phenom-turned-boxer, has drawn praise and ire, at equal turns, since he emerged on the scene nearly two years ago when he knocked out fellow YouTuber AnEsonGib in one round. Since then, Paul has gone on to knock out pro athletes such as Nate Robinson, Ben Askren, and Tyrone Woodley.

I'm so relieved! In the last Jake Paul thread which announced his imminent retirement after he captures a world-title, I said that I would stop following the sport. I'm so glad that now I have hope for the future of boxing, the game needs Jake Paul and a greater presences of social-media influencers and celebrity fights.

Lets be honest, we all rather see Money-Kicks vs. Floyd Mayweather over a Sunny Edwards title defense, or any Matchroom English-title defense any day of the week.

Who is money-kicks? Only a shill or casual wants to see an ancient Mayweather "fight" some I assume what is another youtuber again. Yeah there is a market for that, fake fans like you, casuals who worship these random goons. Rather see real boxers fight real boxers, don't lump us in with your brain-dead a$$. You have no self respect or shame with your worship of these people. At least when you worshiped Wilder you stood behind someone who actually had some credibility in the sport. That man and Fury broke you.

Jake Paul responded to Bob Arum's disparaging remarks about women's boxing, calling him a 'Dinosaur', you jonnyc420 are the same. You have no vision and your outdated customs is what is killing boxing, shut your mouth and let progressive individuals move boxing into a new era, you ****aSorass!

Arum spoke the truth, DAZN promising to air Taylor/Serrano before Valdez/Stevenson. That is so progressive, Hearn saying Paul brings the attention, not the ladies, my God so much progression. You are clearly a living caricature of the Steve Buscemi fellow youths meme. Are you not the same guy saying he wants to see 45 year old Mayweather "box" some random dude? Yeah that is so progressive. Man, you are too easy to shut down. I gotta say, I think I am simply bored with you. How long til you turn on Paul like you did your former hero Wilder? You'll never live that down son.

DAZN’s executive vice president Joe Markowski, is indeed a progressive mind. Thanks to Markowski implementing inclusive boxing reform, we can all enjoy both Taylor vs. Serrano on DAZN and Valdez vs. Stevenson on ESPN ; the outdated stubborn fossil Bob Arum only stands in the way of real progress, like you! You fear change and are stuck in the past, evident in how you keep bringing up the 'Bronze-Bum' Deontay Wilder, move-on jonnyc69.

Start supporting women's boxing, and any one of note that wants to box and raise boxing's profile in the world of sports, or shut your mouth!

Nope, I will never let you live it down, because I know it boils that blood. You went so hard in your belief in Wilder just to turn on the man. Kind of like you are doing here, how long til you flip flop on this? They are simply admitting that mens boxing matters more go head to head. They wont, womens boxing is simply not a big deal no matter how hard you stomp in those heels little lady.

A few weeks ago, Jake Paul, a YouTube sensation, and novice prize-fighter, filled an 18,000 seat arena full of fans paying to watch him take on Tyron Woodley, a former UFC champion in a professional boxing match.
A lot of boxing purists are up in arms about Jake Paul (and his brother Logan).
They shouldn't be able to do this.
                    They're not real fighters.
                    This is a disgrace.

Well, I'm a lifelong boxing fan, and a purist to boot.
And I say: Don't hate the Paul brothers.
                    I certainly don't.
In fact, I've now ponied up the cash to watch three of their fights (two on PPV and one in person), and I've thoroughly enjoyed each one.

                    This is *prize fighting.
And the prize is money, not a championship.
Boxing is not set up to crown the best fighters in each division.
Boxing is set up to funnel as much money as possible to a select few cash cows while consigning the vast majority of fighters to poverty.
Even some "world champions" have to have day jobs to support themselves.

Every once in a while, the "free market" incentivises two of the best to share a ring in their prime.
And when that happens, it's a real treat.
But, and I repeat myself, that is *not what the sport is set up to produce.
The sport is set up to produce exactly what we saw on that Saturday night with the YouTuber.
The sport is set up to produce Jake Paul.

For those saying, "That wasn't a real fight," and "Paul isn't a real fighter," I say this:
If the bout is officially sanctioned, watched over by an official commission, and neither the action nor the outcome is scripted, then it's a real fight, and Paul's a real fighter.
It just wasn't a fight between the best practitioners of the sport, and Paul isn't a true master of the craft.
                    But the punches were real.
                    The danger was real.
                    It was a real fight.
And Paul is a real fighter.

Not many regular pro fighters have taken as difficult of fights, for as many scheduled rounds as Paul has at this point in his career.
And very few have ever had the kind of media hype to contend with that Paul has.
The kid set the bar high, and he's raised it every night out.
Will he be a world champion someday?
                    Almost certainly not.
But is he a legitimate fighter?
Yes, we have to say that he is.

And he's doing a good thing for boxing.
He's bringing attention to the sport.
He's supporting a few fighters that we might not otherwise have heard of.
Oh, and he's given us a couple of highlight reel KOs.

I went to his fight in Cleveland.
I sat about 10 rows back.
                    The atmosphere was electric.
He brought a "big fight" feel like you'd get in Vegas or at the Garden to *Cleveland.
When was the last time someone did that?
I hope he does it again.
                    I'll be there.

The problem I have with the Paul Brothers' Circus is not the Pauls.
The problem I have is with the problems that it reveals about boxing.
The way the sport is set up, most fighters get paid peanuts, while only a very few at the very top pull in riches that dwarf earnings in every other sport.
And sometimes, the richest of the rich aren't even ranked, let alone champions.
                    That's not a problem the Paul's created.
That's a *systemic problem that boxing has created for itself.
And until that problem gets fixed, we're gonna keep getting the Pauls.
And they're going to keep raking in 7 or even 8 figure purses.

So, don't hate the Paul brothers.
                    Don't hate the fighters.
Your real beef is with the fight *game.
                    The politics of the sport.
The *economic arrangement of the sport.
                    That's where the problem lies.
