Notice that I used the word "some". 1st time Ive seen it since it happened. I only really watched because Pac is a Southpaw so I wanted to remember how Cotto did against Quintana who also moves decently and has some decent pop. A few things stood out to me. Cotto was mentaly a different guy back then. You can tell when a guy is undefeated. He was so confident and halfway ****y walking around the ring and on the ropes before the fight. Its like he knew he was the **** and invincible. He also had that measured ****y style that guys have when they feel like theyre big and they can cave your chest in no matter what you try to do or how many punches you land.
Then I started gauging him vs Pac. Cotto was very heavy handed against Carlos and I said that he could break Pac down if he hits him with those heavy shots. However, we all know that Cotto was never super fast but I always felt that he had pretty good speed for his size but seemed to lose it after the Margarito fight. Now watching this fight with Quintana, he looks slow even back then so I think that will be a super huge advantage for Pac. I also saw that Quintana still had some good moments and landed pretty well on Cotto but he also fought very slow and was always worried about Cotto's power so he stayed moving backwards. I think Pac will fight very fast and although he may not be moving forward, I think he will commit to his shots alot more. Thats what I try to tell people about the Cotto & Mosley vs Margarito. People said that if Cotto couldnt hurt him then how could Mosley but I said the differnce is that even though Cotto was landing power shots on Margarito, he never fully commited to any of them. He normaly digs but he didnt do that to Margarito because he was on the move.
I said Mosley always commits no matter who the opponent and he will try to dig in Margarito & punch through him so its a totally different kind of power and we saw the result. Its also the same thing I say when people talk about Mosley vs Clottey compared to Cotto vs Clottey. I think Mosley has a chance to stop him because he will commit to the punches more and punch through him. Quintana didnt do that to Cotto and Pac wont do it full time either but I could see him doing it alot with his speed advantage and he's going to catch Cotto atleast a few times with that Southpaw style. Again, I also think that mentaly Cotto is a different guy now. He doesnt have that unbeaten swagger. That could be the biggest thing about this fight to me. On one hand I think his swagger will be back for this fight because he still has some good wins, he knows Pac is a smaller man, and he knows a win here puts him back on top and alot of people will claim that he's still undefeated. However, if the fight starts and Pac does anything well then I think he could lose that swagger very quickly and start thinking that he isnt the same guy, he's finding out how good the #1 P4P guy in the sport is, and he's losing to a smaller guy. That will take all his confidence away even if its just a normal close fight.
All in all I think it will be a good fight that could go either way but I think Pac is on point now, is big enough to take a hard shot, is a warrior enough to take a hard shot, and is too fast for Cotto. I think he stops him sometime after the 8th round and he bloodies Cotto up after some tough rounds early. Also, if Cotto was to win, I think a fight between him & Floyd would be great. I dont know if Floyd has truly gained any weight but I think his body has changed enough to the point where he is built enough to handle any WW now so I think he will geniuley fight them all. I dont know if his weight has changed but physicaly he looks more ripped & bulked than he did when he fought Zab & Baldy. My main concern about Floyd in those fights is mental. I dont think he feels that he can let go like he did at the lower weights against these huge guys and he may have been right at 1st but with his new body I think he would rake those guys if he let his hands go and really commited to being more physical. I think he could fight a Margarito or Cotto right now and be just as strong, physical, and destroy them with his skill but I could see him mentaly not thinking that and deciding to pot shot instead and then they would give him hell. He's got to realize that he's capable of hurting them. I often think that his sparring has hurt him. I think he started sparring huge guys like Jantuah while he was still small and he pot shotted them all the time because they were so big and it transfered over into the ring. I think they felt that guys like Jantuah would help him because if he cant hurt Floyd then no one his size could but in some ways I think it had the reverse affect because he was probably so big & strong that Floyd just pot shotted him in sparring.
