Cuautehmoc is correct. 100 years ago you will ask any person from Puerto Rico or any "latin amercian" country and they would identify themselves to be from a country not from a group of countries. It is actually very simple. Like Jack said it is a political term not a scientific one.. anyway... if it makes you feel good to call your self Latino or Hispanic or Chicano or Newyorikan thats up to you..
One thing Cuautehmoc was incorrect[B] Puerto Rican history does go back many centuries..[/QUOTE]
People that are calling me ****** don't understand how to read or don't read my posts. You get it though and to behonest, Latino is a term that is so frequently used it doesn't bother me I just think it doesn't represent us as a people because it has roots in Europe.
Like I said, in Mexico we denounce the Europesn invaders and have tried to identify ourselves from our native roots. That's why in the Mexican flag you see the cactus, eagle and snake, representing the Aztec legend that goes along with it. You don't see a coat of arms from Spain or France.....
Most "Latin Americans" from South America, think they are European. With the exception of Peru, Equador and Bolivia, all the other countries think European is the best and identify themselves with Europe.
For example, Venezuelans (While great people) think they are European. Their country is named after Venice in Italy, it has nothing to do with the great culture that already existed there prior to anybody coming and "discovering" it.
People are ****** and don't get it but hey....what can you do?

last i checked, The Filipines were conquered by the spanish and most have a spanish surname, in fact, they speak spanish in their country too, although most speak a tagalog dialect................
I'm just asking because it seems like your thread is on the semi prejudice side

I feel you Temo, but what i dont get in Mexico is the fact that they take great pride in thier past, but are very racist towards Indios or darker complected mexicanos. that in itself is a slap in the face of the very cultures that created what is now mexico. Its those racists/clasists that spit on or talk **** about their own countrymen and that is a very EUROPEAN trait.....
