Victor Ortiz: Before We Write Him Off As A Quitter

By Jake Donovan - So after one knockout loss, we’re ready to dismiss Victor Ortiz as a never-will-be. Perhaps the preliminary analysis proves correct in the long term. The southpaw offered nothing in the way of a protest in the fateful sixth round of his slugfest with Marcos Maidana this past weekend.

He even owned up to a quit job in his post-fight interview, much to the chagrin of his fans and Golden Boy Promotions. The heads of the L.A.-based promotional powerhouse were none too pleased with the way Ortiz opted to bow out after working so hard to keep together a card designed as a makeshift homecoming for the junior welterweight tabbed by HBO and oh so many in the media as boxing’s next star.

Perhaps it’s the latter part that has ruffled the feathers of boxing scribes in print and online, that they were left to feel embarrassed after all of the flattering ink dedicated towards the kid. Most post-fight reports seemed to focus less on Maidana’s incredible come-from-behind knockout, instead reading more like “Ortiz flat out quit against what’s his name.” [details]

Dude can come back. But til he proves otherwise in a tough fight, he'll be labeled a quitter.

Plain an simple his next few fights will make or break him. Who knows maybe he wins a tune-up and beats Maidana in a re-match by boxing the way he should have in the first fight.

i still have faith in the guy, but that loss was a HUGE disappointment.

I ain't writing ortiz off. I'm still a bigg fan. I don't jump on band wagons or jump off. i'm a real fan, and real fans stay with their fighters no matter what. always been a chavez fan sr and jr and lil omar, same with gatti and manny others. his next fight better be good, but if not, so what, look at gatti, he lost what 12 and he's still a legend. ortiz does need to kick himself in the ass for that **** in the end. he'll come out of it. look at kahn he got wooped but he's still there and hungry, ortiz will be also.

I never drank the Ortiz kool-aid. I knew some **** like this was going to happen but not against a guy like Maidana. I thought he was going to get exposed when he stepped up his competition.

What's funny is that Victor Ortiz could of won that fight
and convincingly if he would have listened to his corner
and fought smart. Wasn't like he didn't have a chance
to pull it off. I just think he had to get beat like that
to learn a valuable lesson about believing the hype.
He quit because at that point he couldn't out tough
Maidana because his power was significant and
Ortiz took too much punishment, more than he
should have if he used his head. I saw De La Hoya
in the crowd telling him to use his head. Mosley
was very disappointed talking to him in the ring.

Nice read. A quitter is often a loose term here but looking at the fight again and again, I can't help but think that he did quit. But it's his life, his choice. Hopefully he can recover and show more heart if he ever meets adversity in the ring again.

I' learn something new every day. Until now I didn't know that an Xray could show "strained" ankle ligaments.

In that Echol's fight, Hopkin did not ..repeat DID NOT dislocate his shoulder, that was what the commentator surmised....kinda. He didn't use it for about a round and a half, and the,,,SURPRISE...he began bashing away with it showing that it was perfectly healthy. At no time was it dangling uselessly at his side. He was able to keep it in position for defence.

A dislocated shoulder makes itself known Jake, and can't be used until the joint is put back in place..... which requires manipulation which was NOT shown in Hopkins' corner.

And the replacement is very painful. .....I know ALL about THAT.
