Guerrero Stops Hinojosa In Eight, Eyes Summer Title Fight

By Jake Donovan - Eleven months of downtime, followed by just three rounds of action in the past five months. That was how Guerrero has spent the past 16 months of his boxing career, including his disappointing two-round no-decision against Daud Cino Yordan in front of his hometown fans in San Jose this past March.

The Gilroy native returned to the Bay Area on Friday night, given a second chance at a lasting impression. The best case scenario was that he wins the fight, regains the respect of the local crowd and manages to get in some rounds in greater efforts to progress his career.

He would go three for three, winning every round of his lightweight main event against late replacement Efren Hinojosa before the fight was stopped after eight rounds due to injury. The night ended with a room full of cheers, and Guerrero’s confidence restored as he prepares for another championship run.

The bout served as the main event of an ESPN2-televised card, airing live from the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif. [details]

The Ghost hit this cat with everything but the kitchen sink and it was some elbow injury that finally stopped Hinojosa. I do not really know if that is a good sign of him having real stopping power at 135, he is a quality fighter though good to see him back in action and please the fans that he disapointed against Yordan.

Maybe Hinojosa is just that tough and it is not that big a deal, but that is somewhat of a question in my eyes if he really expects to make noise at 135.

I think Hinojosa is just a tough rugged veteran, his face looked like left over potato salad after the fight.

No doubt he messed up his face something fierce, Hinojosa might jsut be that tough because it was crazy how many flush clean beautiful shots he was eatting. He is a good fighter for sure though, he really did not deserve that much **** for the Yordan fight and I am looking forward to his next fight on HBO (although like I said the power thing is my only question and only at 135, if he decides to stay there when he settles into the class his power will probably be fine, he throws beautiful punches though so I am sure he hits hard enough to keep dudes honest whatever class he fights in).

He was talking about fighting Juan Diaz after the fight and talked about how great he felt at 135. I think he should campaign at 130, but if he is talking like that to me it sounds like he wants to be at 135.

I wouldn't read too much into his "lack of" power at 135 tonight. He only found out on Wednesday that he was fighting at lightweight, after having spent the past 6-8 weeks preparing his body to make 130.

It probably shouldn't make a difference in the grand scheme of things, but if he was preparing all along to make 135 and then replenish, I think we'd have seen a much stronger version of him in the ring tonight, as opposed to his just simply making 135.

I'm not saying that he beats Diaz no question if they were to fight in August. Just saying that it'd be easier to judge with a training camp geared around a lightweight fight. The way he was throwing early, I'm confident he'd have stopped Johnnie Edwards (his original opponent) before it went rounds.

The power thing is more of a concern then anything else at this point, I am not overly concerned either just something I will be watching regarding him going forward (especially if he campaigns at 135).

I am not trying to make a snap judgement from this fight and saying he lacks power at 135, he could easily prove that to be false down the road. Just a question that arose in my mind while I was watching this fight.

He is, I was lookin at his record and he went the distance with Huerta. But that was back in 07. Either way Guerrero looked ****in tiny in there, I didn't know they were at 135 tonight, for whatever reason I thought it was 130. lol I was wondering why the **** Efren looked like a beast compared to Robert, he was ****in tiny standin next to that guy.

But sharp as Guerrero looked tonight at 135, if he can fight like that at 130 he could wreck ****. He had great head movement and planted some nice shots. And I think Atlas was right about his jab, cause in the second round I think Roberts corner told him to throw the jab more, he threw it more and he was following up with bombs, then he went back to not using it right after that, and he had to work a little harder to get his power shots in. I think he should definitely go for Klassen. After that he has Chris John right below him.

maybe we were all a little hard on Robert(including myself).he's a good fighter & has alot on his plate outside the ring.it's unfortunate but if that last fight it looked as thou Robert was confused with his opponent & may have lost if it went to the judges after 4 rounds.I believe that was why the fans were hard on him.he's NOT a quitter! How could he be a quitter when his wife battles for her life everyday.I'd say he is anything but that.his wife is his inspiration.that Mexican sure was tough because he ate some serious leather.kudos to teddy atlas as well.I think he is very knowledgable but often repeats himself & babbles too much.I thought he was very good last night & his plea to the csac too stop matching overmatched opponents.I also really enjoyed his scoring meter.he was very accurate on his judging & explained everything he saw thoroughly.I agree judges should be forced to use those meters.I think it would get rid of the crappy judging since they would be forced to explain their decisions on scoring round to round.I think it's a great idea.good job teddy, that was the best commentary I've heard from teddy in months.
