Skills: In the skills department, we look at boxing styles and the ability to mix up punches in bunches. Clottey has more of a peekaboo style to his craft. His left jab lands with accuracy on both the body and upstairs. Cotto however has a more refined skill set with nice head and foot movement, ability to land with power using both hands.
Edge: Cotto
Power: With Clottey going the distance 2 of the last 7 fights, he is not known so much for the 1 punch knockout power. He was able to nearly put away a blown up Diego Corrales who moved up from lightweight and land some good shots versus Antonio Margarito early on. Look for the left hand of Clottey to land early and often. Cotto’s power is well documented. The destruction of Alfonzo Gomez last year was a showcase fight demonstrating his KO power and devastating punches to the liver. A few of those shots will send any normal man down in a heap.
Edge: Cotto
Speed: This has never been a huge factor in the game plan for either fighter. However Cotto has shown that he was able to keep up with Shane Mosely, albeit an older Shane Mosley. Clottey is no slouch when it comes to speed.
Edge: Cotto (slightly)
Defense: World class Ghanian fighters like Azuma Nelson and Ike Quartey had an uncanny ability to keep their hands up creating a virtual shell to protect themselves from any incoming onslaught; and Clottey is no different. He was able to deflect a high percentage of Zab speedy punches using this style. Cotto has also shown himself to be hard to find in there. He kept Shane Mosley off of him when it counted most. However, the classic Ghanaian defense Clottey uses is slightly better.
Edge: Clottey
Experience: Neither fighter lacks experience. They have two recent common opponents of which they each lost and beat (Antonio Margarito and Zab Judah). Cotto has 33 fights under his belt, and Clottey has 35 demonstrating that they have what it takes to win in the ring.
Edge: Neither
Chin: Clottey has shown that he can take a punch from big welterweights like Antonio Margarito and not get hurt. Cotto on the other hand was buzzed by smaller guys like Zab
Edge: Clottey
Conditioning: Joshua Clottey has been known to bounce back when in the hole. In his fight with Margarito, with his left hand broken early in the fight he continued bravely. We never have seen Cotto badly hurt AND be able to mount a comeback. In fact, when Mosley began to apply pressure in the later rounds, Cotto seemed to get on his bicycle.
Edge: Clottey
Wear-and-tear: Many were wondering if Cotto had any after affects from the Margarito fight, however he showed no signs of that against his last opponent Michael Jennings. But lets be serious Clottey is no
Edge: Neither
Outcome: This analysis shows that Cotto has the edge in Skill, Power, Speed, while Clottey takes the Defense, Chin, and Conditioning categories. I believe the biggest factors will be skill, power and speed. Cotto can simply do more things in there. He can jab and move, he can stand and fight or a little of both. Clottey has really only one way to win, wear Cotto down the stretch. He might be able to do just that, but its more likely than not that Cotto will be able to outbox Clottey when he has to. Prediction: Cotto by decision.
