    Raul Marquez - What Happened?

This guy was supposively a pretty good amateur, and won a world title in the pros, but...

It was a vacant title against a nobody.

He got beaten up by Campas (which is pretty bad for any fighter who is supposively good) and Vargas.

He has been destroyed by a lot of fighters after that (Taylor, etc.).

He pulled off an upset win over Giovanni Lorenzo, which gave a glimmer of hope for his career, but then was crushed by Arthur Abraham.

What went wrong with this guy?

Other than someone like Ray Mercer, I'm having a hard time thinking of other Olympians who were bigger disappointments in the pros.

Marquez was just a good fighter who lost to some spectacular ones. I can't say much about the Campas fight, but remember that Yori Boy wasn't a push over at his best. He was also one who was beaten by some pretty outstanding boxers.

I think the more alarming thing about Marquez was that he lost so badly to most fighters.

Losing close fights to good fighters is something that happens, but losing every round against Taylor, Vargas, Abraham, etc. is bad for your prospects of being respected as a good fighter in boxing.

Might seem harsh but he never seemed to have the drive to be a champion. He gave up in all of his losses.

What's funny is that Abraham later admitted that Marquez's body punching had damaged his ribs. Marquez quit without taking much damage really, he just wasn't up for it.
