Matt “Plaster of” Paras' Weekend Column:
I’m late. No not for my period. Hell, I’m not even a girl; most boxing fans aren’t. However, with all the reactions of Floyd Mayweather Jr. “ducking” Shane Mosley, you’d think most of them are. What I am late for is talking about this video:
The video is so…biased. Yes, Shane Mosley wants to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. and is trying to make hype for the fight. I understand that. Still, the lack of questions Brian Kenny asks are astounding compared to his recent Floyd Mayweather interview, which was great. While it wasn’t as one sided as the one from 2006, BK did a great job really pressing the questions to Mayweather. One would think he would ask tough questions to Mosley like he did to Mayweather. Brian Kenny’s interview is disgraceful. Time is no excuse since they could edit a short version for TV and post the full version on the internet.
Kenny should have asked tough questions, like why Mosley turned down a fight with Floyd Mayweather in 2006 when Shane Mosley’s “tooth hurt.” He could have asked about Paul Williams, who has called out Shane Mosley. He could have brought up that Floyd Mayweather's purse is reported at 15 million dollars for this fight, while Golden Boy Promotions offered him only 8 million dollars for the Shane Mosley fight.
Another thing that bothers me is how he keeps repeating that "Shane Mosley is the Welterweight champ." He’s not. Yes he beat Margarito, but Cotto has a win over him. For someone who likes to follow The Ring’s ratings as much as Kenny does, he should know Shane Mosley is not the Welterweight champion. He’s made a big deal of alphabet title holders and how they are not the real champions and how the lineal champion or Ring champion is, but he states that Shane Mosley is THE Welterweight champ. He’s not. Close, but he needs to rematch Miguel Cotto to legitimately claim the Welterweight championship.
Whether or not you believe Floyd Mayweather Jr. is ducking Shane Mosley is a different question. I personally do not, but the Brian Kenny interview is a shame. Brian Kenny’s interviews with Mayweather are great. He asks great legitimate questions, but it is very disappointing that there is clearly a double standard when it comes to Shane Mosley.
