Welterweight APB: Shane Mosley is Still The Man To Beat

By Jake Donovan - It’s amazing how one fight can change everything.

Prior to his welterweight title fight with Antonio Margarito earlier this year, Shane Mosley was constantly on the tip of every welterweight’s tongue. The belief was that the former three-division world champion reached that point in his career – well beyond his sell date, but still enough notoriety to where his name looks good on any résumé.

The height of the “we want Shane” frenzy came in the period between his 12th round knockout of Ricardo Mayorga and the aforementioned Margarito fight. Those who called out his name were quick to do so after he looked every bit of his 37 years of age in struggling with Mayorga throughout their September clash before delivering the highlight reel ending. I think Mosley should stay active, a fighter like him needs the activity to stay sharp.

I disagree. Older fighters shouldn't fight more than twice a year. Activity is essential but more than 2 fights a year is, I believe, unhealthy at their age where they need more time to let their aging bodies recuperate. Hopkins fought once a year for 06, 07 and only twice for 08. Mosley has done a good job of fighting consistently at his age as well as allowing himself time to recoup in between IMO. 2 fights a year for the Sugar man for the remainder of his career sounds about right.

I'd rather see a JMM-Pacquiao III or Ricky Hatton. I don't think anyone is trying to dodge him, they just have other plans.

I think the opposite but I could be wrong.

Edit: And I think it depends a lot on what type of fighter you are, a guy like Hopkins doesn't rely on his speed and reflexes nearly as much as Mosley, who relies on it a lot more. You need to stay active to keep your reflexes sharp, but as I said, I could be wrong.

I would like to see that but I'm sure Berto's handler wouldnt let that happen... I also dont think anyone is ducking shane I just think everyone is busy with other fights, because they're all good fight it's not like Cotto is about to fight an easy opponent or Pacquio either...

That's the fight I think should be made as well. Hopefully Cotto-Mosley II happens sometime in the fall should Miguel get by Clottey in June. But the whole Hatton-Pacquiao and the rumored Mayweather-JMM matches is what could be getting in the way of the rematch occurring sooner rather than later.
