"Dream Fight" - De La Hoya vs. Pacquiao: White Knights

By Patrick Kehoe - Oscar De La Hoya fighting Manny Pacquiao has brought out almost every kind of analysis, warning, celebratory clich? bombastic flourish, shading of cultural commentary and insider tripe, just as all truly mega boxing fights inevitably do.

Though, at the heart of the matter ?a prizefight of perplexing possibility ?uncertainly over the match-up irritates some and confounds others. But by all means, consume the printed word, surf and scan the virtual tide of prefight pronouncements across the Web.

Over load, stuffing oneself with information, gossip, disinformation and expert point-counter pointing remains central to the fullest possible enjoyment of the big fights; for great fights do act upon ones nerves, mind, heart, imagination and pocketbook, in each personalized case, according to the passion we indulge, the heroism we imagine, the theatre of ethnic identification for which we live.

Can mighty Manny Pacquiao truly defy what seems to be the limit of biological inheritance? Does Oscar De La Hoya, rich beyond accounting at 35, really fight from absolute need to dominate in the ring, second to second, against the very best, like his business partner Bernard Hopkins? Will the fight come down to a study of providence in two parts, as Manny Pacquiao’s trainer, a former trainer of De La Hoya, Freddie Roach prophesized: De La Hoya early, Pacquiao late? [details]

After seeing the weigh-in photos and the posing together, I was much more surprised about the size difference, or, more to the point, the lack thereof. Even though Oscar has what seems a decent height and reach advantage , when they stood side by side Pacquiao measured up very well. He actually didn't seem much smaller at all and looked like a proper WW, or at least a Jr WW. Man, Cotto and Margarito was a hideous difference and standing together at the weigh-in they looked like what I thought Oscar and Pac would look like.

Very surprised at Oscar's weight also. 145? That's pretty well under for someone that supposedly couldn't make 147 at all only one year ago.

I guess all questions will be answered very soon now.

DLH skill is more of a question mark than the size advantage.

Definitely NOT the size difference of Cotto and Margarito.. Marg was happy to face Cotto cause he was so much damn bigger. With that said it was still competitive.. Marg was just too big. DLH fough like garbage his last fight though.. size wont win this fight.. if DLH doesnt fight better than he did against Forbes (which may not happen) then Paq is going to whup DLH ass.
We know what Paq is gonna bring.. DLH skill is more of a question mark for me than the size advantage.

marg happy facing cotto because of size? remember he also faced williams, cintron who are big or bigger..don't forget cotto had always faced smaller guys himself, outweighing his opponents, fighting ex lightweight,,,he just fought a guy in tony who could take punches, hell he took santos punches and santos weighed in at 171 in rematch,he took williams, cintrons punches,he just has a good chin,,cotto just a quitter

              Size

You can add weight to a smaller man,s frame and say he is the same as a natural welter. Not so, all it does is diminish pacmans
punching power& slow him down. Oscar started at 130. Manny
at 130 is what he matured at. No wonder oscar is smiling , how can the man justify this fight. If he wantsd to impress us have him
fight margarito ,cotto , mosely, winky ligit oppoments are so
numerous . Why fight a feathger weight? Because he can't lose.
I see jab ,jab, jab, and finally a stoppage. I hope he will be proud
of himself because real boxing fans won't. Rodhook

Adding weight doesn't diminish punching power... it just puts you into a new bracket of fighters who naturaly weigh more, and naturallty punch harder than the previous bracket of fighters you're used to... Pacman's weight is clearly muscle, and the muscle that Pacman was able to put on will increase his power, the question is... Did he have Welterweight power to begin with?
