But Calzaghe is for some reason excused from that? Why so? The same Calzaghe fans crying about Floyd not taking on any of the real challenges in his division now feel that Calzaghe has no need to fight the other best Light Heavyweight in the world, Chad Dawson. Why is that?

Hopkins and Tarver Both Took On Challenges in Pavlik and Dawson

Calzaghe took on Kessler and then Hopkins. One was the biggest challenge at 168, the other was the biggest challenge at 175.
A lot of Calzaghe fans feel that, as a fighter who relies on speed and stamina, the only way is down once you reach 36/37. If you are past your prime and feel that you have beaten the number one guy in the division, retiring is justifiable IMO.

I agree.
For the Calzaghe fans who say that we will never be satisfied and there will always be someone out there that he's ducking, my response to them is that many of us including myself never wanted to see Calzaghe fight RJJ in the first place. A good fighter fights other good fighters, not fighters that used to be good and now aren't. Calzaghe could have spent these last seven months preparing for a much more meaningful and competitive fight. Hell, even though Pavlik was "exposed" by Hopkins, he would still probably be twice as competitive as RJJ.

2. Cal vs. Dawson has ALWAYS been a discussion on this board and was furthered amplified by Dawson's dominance over the same fighter that knocked out Roy Jones Jr and has been a more dangerous opponent than Roy ever since, relatively speaking.

Well Hopkins and Tarver really had nothing to lose. Both also took the fights because they were precieved to be finished, with nothing to lose. Calzaghe on the other hand is riding high right now. He has all the momentum in the world. Why take the risk?Dawson also has zero drawing power on top of that.

Originally posted by Pullcounter View Postif he retires, that's fine, but if he continues to fight Dawson should be on top of the list of opponents.
I also think that if he does retire, he should say something to the effect of "I've reached the age where I feel that it's best for me to no longer fight", rather than "Dawson is unproven etc."
