John, have you ever been beaten up so bad in the ring that you felt like quitting during the fight? Would you quit during a fight if you thought your long term health was at risk?

I feel that most fighters put their pride above their health. This is admirable, but also incredibly ******.

If u really think about it then, being a professional boxer in the first place might be ******... you cannot expect people to put their all into a fight and still maintain a reasonable limit of what they should put up with..once u put all that training in, and your adrenaline and emotions are sky high...I have been in situations several times in my career where my health was VERY MUCH in danger...I had one fight -and I was just talking to the ringside doc from that fight about 5 days ago- where my LIFE was in serious danger...and I got through it for one reason only: Because I did everything I could to mask my condition, to mask and hide the distress I was in...even the ESPN announcers didnt have a clue as to what was happening...I was told a while back and by the doc the othe rnight that if things had gotten worse I could have died...and that oif I wasnt so young and strong at the time I might have that night...but the point is. fighters are TRAINED to withstand the effects of boxing and that means mentally too...for a real fighter its hard to actually go the process of quitting

Yeah man. Thanks for the reply I forgot about this thread.

I suppose your right in that you are in the wrong sport if you are worried about the health risks boxing entails, but I still think many boxers take unnecessary punishment. There are so many boxers out there that can't even muster an intelligible sentence anymore, let alone stay competitive in the ring.

I'm not sure what I would do in a situation where carrying on fighting would put my health at risk. I have been in the ring before where I have taken some pretty big shots in sparring and in-house ameteur fights. Even though I have been hurt I have never quit because I always wanted to get my opponent back and prove myself. I can't speak for the proffesional ranks, but I guess it's similar across the board. Maybe in retrospect many boxers would erase that one fight too many to regain their decreased brain function, but when they are in the ring they just want to prove themselves and nothing else matters. I know that when you are in the ring, nothing but the man in front of you is on your mind.

            Thanks John.

Exactly...it's like, I have been in fights and was cut badly...and another fight I tore my rotater in the first round...no way could I stop, though, and that was even while realizing that I could very likely be causing myself permanent damage by staying in there...but I always feel like this: The only fight that matter is the one you are in at that moment. There is no tomorrow

Thats what probably seperates the pro's from the am's. The willingness to go that extra mile. I would love to fight in the pro ring someday but there is saying it and there is doing it. I don't get down to the gym as much as I should because of university and my gym isn't exactly local, but Juan Diaz manages to balance the two. Although I am no Juan Diaz lol.

Thanks for your thoughts. It's nice to hear from a guy who has been there and done it.

                  John,

How do you feel about the current state of Chad Dawson's career? and what do you think of Edie Mustafa as a trainer?

I have never been in the gym with Eddie but I have talked to him about training and seeing as how he is a former world champion I am pretty sure he knows what he is talking about...now that just because a guy fought it means he is a good trainer because thats not always true...but Eddie seems sharp to me...Chad looks good...always has pretty much...only thing is that 175 doesnt really have that potential for a mega fight for him...

I think Dawson should stay and establish himself as the no. 1 at LHW. Eventually some big guns from 168 will move up and they'll come looking for the top guy. I wouldn't bet on it being any other than Chad.

Still Dawson could try to get a fight with one of the german based champions (Erdei or Garay). In Germany the money is big. Felix Sturm got a whopping 1.1 million euros for defending against a japanese no-hoper.

John do you think Chad considers travelling to Germany for a fight?
