The plight of Paul Williams - the most feared welterweight

If you are a true boxing fan how could you not feel for this guy? His situation is the epitome of whats wrong with boxing. Now don't get it twisted I am not a PW nut hugger or into bad mouthing any fighter. Anyone who is willing to step in the ring and do what these guys do has my admiration. But His situation proves that A big money fight is far more important than proving you are the best. How else could you explain how every boxer from damn near 140 up to 160 would gladly sit down and make their case for why they "deserve" to fight Oscar del a hoya. Who has no belts at the moment and really isn't one of the elite fighters at any weight class he chooses to be in. But a guy like Williams who has one loss which he avenged in devastating fashion and a win, regardless of how controversial it may be, over the hottest welterweight right now Margarito, has to run around begging for someone to fight him. And even though he won HE is the one clamoring for a rematch with Margarito. Now correct me if I am wrong but shouldn't this be the other way around?

Some people believe that some of this is his own fault. He is an anomaly. Which leads a lot of people to say he needs to be in a higher weight class. But my feelings are if you train properly, maintain the proper diet and are able to safely make the weight then how tall or how big you are shouldn't be a problem.

I just feel like Paul is a guy who deserves more respect than what he gets. Yes he is flawed but so is every other boxer in some way and yes even your favorite boxer isn't perfect. I cant just say that other boxers are just choosing to duck him on their own. I feel the promoters, sanctioning bodies, broadcast companies are also responsible for making fighting someone like PW a "high risk low reward" type of fight. And its become the easiest excuse for a boxer to make to justify not fighting him. The guy is just as much a champion as any other boxer in and around welterweight. But there is no one out there calling him out. No boxer out there is taking shots at him in the media. No one out there is hungry for a piece of PW.

And when you look at it how can he not be considered the most feared? Look at PW and miguel cotto. both have one loss. both have been champions. But who do you think is going to have an easier time getting another top tier welterweight in the ring? You would think it would be the one who has some type of championship around his waist or who at the moment has a legitimate claim to the lineal crown. But we all know that isn't the case.

The sad thing about this is that as I have grown and watched boxing for the past ten years is that this situation is becoming more and more common. Where boxing don't want to fight a guy because they envision themselves with that person's belts around their waste. They can't they are too blinded by the dollar signs in their eyes. But as boxing fans what can we do? what steps can the boxing community take to help try and right this ship before it capsizes? 5 10 maybe even 15 years from now will i be able to sit and watch Friday and Wednesday nights fights with my son they way me and my dad have done every week? (Tuesday night fights back in the day). These are things i think all boxing fans should be paying attention to. I would love to get some feedback from others on the site. (thoughtful answer please! im not really into all the craziness)

Good post. Yo, hit "Edit" and chop your post up into paragraphs by double spacing. It will be easier for others to read.

So why did you create an ALT?. You didn't do it to respond to this post...did you? Did you stop when Margs and the words "most feared" were connected also, because I did when I saw them together lol...

I don't mean in the sense of other boxers see him and are overtaken by fear I mean its fear in more a business sense. Like if you were to look at each fight as an investment for the fighter. Investing in a fight with Williams comes off as too risky

I think the business side sees it as not much gain cause to me he is a little over hyped and yet unproven. I really think he is gonna be the next Zab Judah. A great name that provides a big stepping stone but thats about it. Lets hope he proves us wrong and does some damage with whomever he fights
