Basically Williams would be willing to fight Cotto, if Cotto and his team accepted their offer. In other words Williams wants a big name to fight at 147......wether Margarito or Cotto

If Cotto fights Williams and loses he blows his rematch with marg in 09 and a **** ton of money that fight makes no sense for him. he should take a bs tune up match with a less then dangerous opponent and then lock horns with Antonio again in June like mentioned in previous threads. if he fights Williams for $4 mil he leaves a ton of $$$ on the table if he losses and puts his rematch in jep with marg...........Lefty

That would be a good scenerio (I agree Cotto should fight a bum first). What happened to Margarito vs Clottey, is that still going down or what? The last I heard Arum was talkin bout having cotto and margarito on the same card again early '09 to set up a rematch later in the year.......if so then that means the only logical fight for Williams and Clottey is to fight eachother.

Margarito isnt fighting Clottey in Nov. anymore. Team Tony stated that Tony wouldnt have enough time to prepare for Clottey with all the tours he was doing after he ****ed up Cotto. This reminds me of Bowe and his famous world tour.

nah... margarito would fight cotto regardless of whether or not he lost to williams because cotto is the biggest money fight margarito could get at 147.

Por unos instantes se abrió levemente una ventana para que Miguel Cotto aspirara al cetro wélter (147 libras) de la Organización Mundial de Boxeo (OMB) del mismo quedar vacante.

Sin embargo, tanto el campeón Paul Williams como su promotor Dan Goossen aseguraron que renunciar a la corona no está en sus planes inmediatos.

“Es totalmente incorrecto. Siempre hemos dicho que nos gustaría experimentar con Paul haciendo peleas entre las 147 y las 168 libras. Estamos mirando a defender el título de la OMB en noviembre”, comentó Goossen en entrevista telefónica con PRIMERA HORA desde sus oficinas en Los Ángeles.

Williams tiene en agenda enfrentar a Andy Kolle el próximo 25 de septiembre en California a diez asaltos en un peso máximo de 160 libras.

La posibilidad de que Cotto optara por la faja de la OMB estuvo latente ante la eventualidad de que Williams la dejara vacante.

No obstante, Goossen aclaró que todavía está esperanzado en que su protegido pueda unificar cetros con el mexicano Antonio Margarito o inclusive defender ante el criollo en el futuro.

“Nosotros colocamos sobre la mesa una oferta de $4 millones para Margarito, pero declinó aceptarla. No tiene excusa. La única es que sabe que no le puede ganar a Paul”, sostuvo Goossen.

Williams se coronó monarca de la OMB en julio de 2007 cuando derrotó a Margarito vía decisión. Sin embargo, el estadounidense perdió el cetro ante el boricua Carlos “El Indio” Quintana en febrero de este año, sólo para recuperarlo cuatro meses más tarde vía nocaut en el primer asalto.

“Estamos buscando las peleas más grandes ya sea Margarito o Cotto. Paul desea pelear contra los mejores entre las 147 y las 168 libras”, aseguró Goossen.

Según Williams, no ha confrontado problemas mayores para bajar hasta el peso wélter a la vez que se hizo eco de las palabras de su promotor en cuanto a su interés de medir fuerzas con Cotto.

“No voy a dejar el título de la OMB. Simplemente estoy experimentando en otras categorías ya que todavía me siento cómodo haciendo las 147 libras y me considero el mejor en ese peso”, indicó Williams a PRIMERA HORA vía telefónica desde Carolina del Sur.

“Pelearía con Cotto, el problema es que nadie ha querido aceptar nuestro reto”, agregó.

Williams tiene en agenda defender la corona de las OMB el 29 de noviembre ante un oponente por determinar
