I would tend to agree with this. That doesnt change the fact that we'll never know how they would've faired against each other.

I'd say Leonard was a better boxer than Duran but that didnt count for much in their first fight. Many other examples of this too. Fights arent won on paper.

Why wouldnt Warren send Joe to fight him? A loss to a guy people were proclaiming as the best of all time wouldnt exactly end Joe's career now, would it?

A loss for Jones to some "unknown stay-at-home Euro fighter" in his own back yard would've been devestating. Jones weighed up the risk/reward factor and didnt like the results.
The same can be said about Calzaghe to be fair. 168 wasn't exactly a deep division when he dominated it for 10 years. Most of the competition and names were in divisions above and below him, LHW and MW most notably.

As for the 'Why wouldn't Warren send Joe to fight him?' question, well Frank likes his fighter undefeated. We all know that, it helps him sell his fighters.

Joe Calzaghe was probably game about a fight with prime Roy but it's down to his promoter to make the fight happen, people needs to think about this? I just don't think Frank wanted that fight for Joe? Amir Khan thinks he's ready for a title shot soon but can you see Frank getting him a title shot anytime soon?

      You see my point?

Difference was that Jones was the Yank Golden Boy with his pick of fights. He could choose who he wanted. Calzaghe could ask for any number of fights but was in no position to demand anything........often having to make do with Warren's bum of the month.

Khan hasnt even fought a fighter with a pulse yet. Joe was a long reigning super mid champ. If he moved up to 175 and got beat by Jones.......it wouldnt tarnish his career at all. If anything, it would enhance it.

If Joe went to 175 or 160 to fight anybody earlier in his career, he would be getting more recognition then he barely gets now.

Frank Warren ruined him, don't care what anyone says. Joe should have jumped ship years ago and done his own thing. Ricky and Naseem are no mugs, their careers got a whole lot better after splitting with Frank, he was just content with keeping his prize fighters in Britain fighting nobodies and making a killing off thier backs.

If you want to prove what you got, and you think you have what it takes, you go where he is and take his titles if you are not the man, and Joe wasn't. Yeah it is easy too say, he wont fight me, but when you are the one looking for the shot, you got to take what you can get. Roy was the man then, so Joe had to come to the states and fight. If I am on top you have to come see ME! So ofcourse Jones would say NO! Now that Joe is the man Roy had no problems going overseas to fight, it just so happens to be in the states.
