Kelly Pavlik Will Return To 160 After Bernard Hopkins

Despite the fact that two of his last three fights were held above the middleweight limit of 160, Cameron Dunkin, co-manager of WBC/WBO middleweight champ Kelly Pavlik, says his fighter will move back down to defend his titles. Pavlik is going to face Bernard Hopkins on October 18 at the catch-weight of 170-pounds. Dunkin says that Pavlik has been forced to find fights at higher weights due to the fighter being unable to secure an opponent at 160. Dunkin was not exactly thrilled with the idea of Pavlik having to go to 170 to fight an opponent as crafty as Hopkins. [details]

Not to nitpick, but "If Pavlik beats Hopkins, and Joe Calzaghe defeats Roy Jones Jr. in September, the two of them will be in line to fight." Well, no...that fight should be NOW. There is no, zero, none at all, not any excuse for Pavlik-Calzaghe to not be made this year. That was the fight. That is the fight everyone wants to see.

What if Pavlik or Calzaghe loses? Both are possible, especially against Hopkins, whom many believe beat Calzaghe to begin with. You have blown a mega-fight if that happens, and for no reason.

This is just another case of boxing shooting itself in the foot, again.

Personally im not that fussed about seeing Pavlik against Calzaghe.
Joe will be retired in 12 months tops, IMO Kelly should be looking at facing AA once he has taken care of Hopkins and AA has done with his mandatory.

So, why is Kelly fighting B-Hop again? It certainly isn't because he's a threat. Also, he's old, past his prime, and is coming off a loss so the name really doesn't mean as much as it used to. I mean, we're talking about someone who's lost 3 of his last 5 fights.

Kelly should stay at MW and fight Abraham.

B-Hops name means more to an up and coming fighter like Pavlik than a near retireing fighter named Joe Calzaghe.Kelly has plenty of time to create big named fights with Abraham and Kessler while Joe will go out fighting two Contender stars and nearly two forty year olds.

Dunkins an idiot, he's could well be jeapordising Pavlik a shot at taking on Calzaghe, he's a fool not to realise that. There's no saying how much Calzaghe is willing to wait. Facing Roy Jones 2 month earlier than expected is a factor in him willing to fight on a bit more imo, so there pushing it. It's also a lot more likely Pavlik will have a loss by that time, by then why should Calzaghe bother.

Pretty pissed with Arum, how he's managed to not get any fights for Kelly I don't know. Sergio Mora for one, and Kesssler whom would've fought at 168 or poss slightly lower, or AA, out of them a deal could have been struck and other fights skipped.

Pavlik shouldn't have to worry about coming back down after Hopkins. The fight should be at 160 to start with. This could possibly be the worst decision of Pavlik's career unless he has a great showing against a 43 year old, but still very dangerous, Hopkins. He could dirty it up enough to hand Kelly his first loss and if that happens, he can kiss a fight with Calzaghe goodbye.

Goin up and down in weight all the time could cause some problems for Pavlik. He's jeopardizin his 160 lb reign by doin this ****. He should just move up and stay there if that's what he's gotta do to get the fights he wants. There's nothin left at 160 except AA, and Pavlik don't have to unify wit him since he's the undisputed champ already. And AA showed he can be effective at SMW so that fight could be done above 160 anyway.

This is good for boxing. Pav does not need Cal. He does not need to keep fighting above 160. He can secure a fight with abraham and start his legacy off with a great win against another top middleweight. Pav is now back in good graces with me as a fan lol.
