UNBEATEN
Date posted: 16/11/2007 10:01:56Many people have been interested to know what, and by whom, Joe’s entrance music for the massive Kessler fight was. I’m sure loads of you have worn your fingers down to stubs by typing away at google, Yahoo answers and even Joe’s official forum to find the answer but have come away disappointed. Well, you’ll be glad to know that answer you seek so dearly is here.
The song is entitled “Unbeaten” and was written especially for Joe by unsigned 17 year old Cardiff rapper Joe Hayde.
Hayde, who is the son of retired former Welsh Super Middleweight title challenger Kevin Hayde, is planning to write more songs as he seeks to further his musical career and you could well soon be hearing another Joe Calzaghe inspired piece pumping from the sound system the next time the unbeaten southpaw makes his way to the squared circle.
“I ain’t been beat, you ain’t gonna beat me.
You ain’t been beat, but your about to be.
Your about to see the demons unleashed in me.
Wait and see the winner, that winner is me.”
Sing the chorus of this unique work and I’m sure you’ll agree it perfectly characterises the way Calzaghe felt as he stepped out in front of 53,000 screaming fans at one of the world’s greatest stadiums.
I recently asked the 35 year old Newbridge pugilist how the song came about and he told me “It was just through knowing Kevin Hayde as a local boxer. I heard his son had written a song for me so I felt there was no harm in listening to it. I really liked it so we decided to put it on.”
Another segment of the track goes;
“Joe Calzaghe is worth the money that you spent cos he hurts every man he’s against and as for Mikkel Kessler, he’ll be pummelled to the deck. He’ll be running for respect and no one’s left to forget he was a legend in the making and now the legend just got taken fair and square. No debate.”
As we all know, Kessler’s third round trip to the canvas was ruled a slip but when the Dane fell so heavily the 17 year old rapper must have thought the “pummelled to the deck” line he’d written was less of a lyric and more of a prophecy. The rest of the sentiments in the track, though, proved to be correct as Joe Calzaghe once again proved himself to be the dominant force in the 168 pound weight class.
Although I’m a particular fan of rap music in general I feel this is a sterling track and one that would not sound out of place on one of EA sports excellent Fight Night games and I’m sure most of you reading this will agree that we may have another South Wales legend in the making.
On the subject of music and boxing, Joe and some of his closest friends attended the Foo Fighters concert at Cardiff International Arena on Tuesday night. Part of the way through, what was a blistering set by Dave Grohl and the boys the spot light turned to the unbeaten master boxing champion, Joe Calzaghe.
Joe stated, “David Grohl announced that I was in the audience and said how much he admired me. He even joked that he’d quite like to spar against me”.
I’m sure that the best part of two decades in the tough and debauchery filled world of rock has toughened the 38 year old front man up but a match up with Calzaghe, even a sparring session, has proved too much for most men.
