Yep. I don't think he can get his head around the idea that you need more than 43 straight wins and a profound belief in destiny to beat Floyd Mayweather. That's what I think is hurting him - he believed, in something bigger than just his ring abilities. And he prepared, hard. And none of it was enough.

If you watch the HBO coverage, there's a moment before Floyd's ring-walk when Ricky is turned facing a turnbuckle while salve is being applied - as the Floyd highlights reel kicks in on the big screen, his eyes flicker briefly upward to see what the boos are greeting and you can literally see the weight of all that belief in fate suddenly run through him with a grimace and a shiver. It's a small thing, but telling. He'd clearly placed a level of emotional importance, 10, maybe 20 times above that of a fight, on beating Floyd.
So I agree there's no joking around when he talks about how bad he's hurting right now.

He also thought he had FLoyd psychologically. He mentioned how Floyd suddenly shut up and he asked him why, Floyd said "because you aren't saying anything' so Ricky thought to himself "ah ha, gotchya." Truth is, Floyd just said, "**** it...I did enough to promote this fight, no sense in doing anymore if he doesn't want to do his part."

Right, and that's where I felt he slipped up in the pre-fight hijinx also, by bringing his bullboy style to the promotional build-up.
Instead of just revelling in his underdog status, he made the curious choice of constantly pointing out how (almost) everybody - from fans, British and American alike, to disgruntled ex-fighters, to small children and house-pets - was on his side, as if trying to ram it down the Mayweather camp's collective throat for intimidatory effect.
Which behaviour isn't exactly consistent with the humble underdog-made-good prototype he champions.
He himself showed a level of ego and made himself the bully, when the egotist and bully's role was supposed to be Floyd's.
And in the end, Floyd was exposed as a much better man than people had been led to believe.

But while I feel Ricky was somewhat wrongheaded in his approach to the build-up, I also realise that he was effectively in the same boat as Floyd, trying to hype a fight, to capture imaginations and emotions.

The difference, I think, is that he ultimately read a lot more into the promotional ballyhoo than Floyd did or ever does.

Bingo. Pretty much what I was alluding to here...

Why do you think that he barely threw any punches? He got petrified.
Dios shut the **** up man, he wasn't petrified. He was putting on all the pressure in first 5 rounds until he lost his cool, started getting tagged and then backed off....hardly petrified, quit ****ing exaggerating. Petrified is watching ****ers run in circles around the ring with their back to the opponent ducking as they scamper. Also, he barely threw any punches because your boy was doing the clinching. Mayweather did a great job, but stop making him seem like he's ****ing Mike Tyson.

Leonard Ellerbe, Roger Mayweather, and Floyd ran a train on Ricky's mom.

Scoring fights is going to be contentious, but I'm siding with Lederman on his card. For a change. I felt Ricky controlled the action through four rounds of the first six, but that's all he did, and he lost a point in one of those rounds. There was a marked difference in his approach in the sixth and in the seventh and subsequent rounds, and he said himself afterwards that he lost his rag. It really showed.

Of course we can argue did Ricky win one round, did he win three, but one thing that didn't happen is a colossal beatdown a la Mayweather-Gatti or Calzaghe - Lacy in which none of the rounds were even close. I think Mayweather's impressive victory is being repainted by some into something it was not, and in all honesty I don't think we need to rewrite history here. Mayweather did a good enough job and was magnaminous enough in victory to not need the favour.

                      instead of fighting
hatton already started crying in the ring
