European champion Matthew Macklin is determined to use his fight against Rafael Sosa Pintos to move closer to a world title shot.

The Birmingham-born Irishman will take on the two-weight Uruguayan champion at the National Stadium in Dublin on Saturday, with one eye on a potential showdown with Kelly Pavlik.

WBO and WBC middleweight kingpin Pavlik is due to fight Miguel Angel Espino on December 19 in Ohio.

And Macklin, who beat Amin Asikainen to lift the European title having previously held the British belt, is hoping victory on Saturday will set up a March showdown with the American.

"My dream would be to face Pavlik at Madison Square Garden on St Patrick's Day," Macklin told The Times.

"Pavlik probably doesn't know who I am, but I want to go there and make a bit of a noise."

Dont think this would be wise for Macklin tbh, should go for a fight with a top ten fighter like Gevor first and then go for an easier belt like Sylvester or Sturm?

Pavlik would beat Macklin, Barker, McEwan, and the other British middleweights just as easily as he beat Gary Lockett.

Good luck to these guys, it's nice to see them wanting to fight the best and I hope they earn and receive their chances, but I just can't see them being competitive should it happen.

The only one who has the subtlety to cause Pavlik problems is Darren Barker, Macklin is all hustle, Pavlik would love him.

I think Barker would cause problems but he is just too small and doesn't hit hard enough.
