Where do you rank him and what were his weaknesses?
I don't rate him. He had a suspect chin and wasn't good enough as a boxer.

How did he win Silver in the 1980 Olympics if he could not box?

And especially if he was giving Marvin Hagler trouble in their bout for the title?...........Rockin'

Hagler was only 31 when he fought Mugabi. Yes Mugabi gave Hagler some trouble. Yes Mugabi had not beaten anyone good before that fight, and he was Ko'd frequently after it, like five other times three of which happened early ( round three, round one round one ). His pro record reads like a hyped fighter, after all he was the beast. Hmm...

Overall, after the Hagler fight Mugabi was never the same (and neither was Hagler, for that matter). When he was knocked out by Norris and McClellan, he was already finished. Not to mention the losses against mediocre opponents when he came back as an old man.

Instead, the KO against Duane Thomas happened because Mugabi was thumbed and gave his back to the opponent, so the ref stopped the fight.

But younger Mugabi was a different beast indeed. Hagler hit him with hellacious shots, and he didn't fall until the 11th round, more from exhaustion than anything else.

"Had not beaten anyone good before that fight" sounds a bit too harsh. Several of those opponents were considered more than credible contenders. Mugabi just disposed of them without flinching, either early or late. I'd love to see someone like the Charlo Bros fighting James "Hard Rock" Green today.

Well he was young for Hagler, and he was Ko'd for the 4th time at age 30 by McClellan. Sorry but the question was all time, which he was not. He is a resume fattener. Did he ever beat a ring ****zine top 10 contender? If so who? Ring ****zine ratings are pretty much the gold standard Way better than WBA,WBC, and IBF ratings.

If you read my first post in this thread you'll see that I do agree in terms of Mugabi not having done enough to be considered an ATG.

On the other hand, I always think of someone such as Carlos Palomino, who's in the HOF without having won a truly meaningful fight. At least Mugabi was exciting to watch, and a much better boxer than people remember.
