Appleby given surprise shot at European title

FORMER British featherweight champion Paul Appleby has been handed a dramatic and unexpected opportunity to bounce back from the first defeat of his professional career.

The 21-year-old South Queensferry boxer has been officially nominated to challenge Oleg Yefimovich of Ukraine for the European featherweight title later this year. Appleby's chance has come after Martin Lindsay, who relieved him of the British title by stopping him in six rounds in Belfast two months ago, decided to relinquish his status as the number one contender for the European belt

Hopefully Appelby wins this and bounces back from the Lindsay defeat. It looks like a tough fight tho.I've not seen any videos of Yefimovich but looking at his record he looks decent plus he's 27,not to old not to young but looks like hes got a bit of experience .Ranked 6 by the wbo , former wbo-inter-continental champion .11 with the wbc and wba and 13th with the ibf . Just checked him out.Boxed 110 rds , Appelby's boxed 75

sounds like a horrible horrible horrible mistake if they accept it.

I'm not sure what weight he should be fighting at for a start.

Lindsay KOd him in belfast (typical British early stopage imo), good fight. Lindsay is very underrated, he'll be tough to beat. Anyone know why he stepped down as no.1 contender? That took me by surprise.

Gingeralbino it says here Lindsay and Micheal Hunter turned it down.Hunter because he wants to fight for the European Superbantamweight belt but don't know about Lindsay. He might just want to concentrate on winning the lonsdale belt outright or something first.

I think it was a good idea turning down the european title shot on Lindsay's part, he's still fairly green so defending the british belt a few times will bring him on well. Plus he can build a bigger fanbase and when/if he fights for the european title it will be a big occasion, Bernard Dunne challenging Kiko Martinez (although the result went wrong) amazed me how big an event it was.
