    RIP Chris Finnegan

Just a few months after his brother, I've heard that Chris passed away today.

He was a better fighter than his record would suggest, a sad loss.

    RIP

May he rest in peace. He was a very capable light heavyweight contender and Olympic gold medalist.

Here's the 1972 FOTY vs light heavyweight champion Bob Foster, Finnegan surpassed all expectations and put up a great effort:

I'm afraid Finnegan left it all in the ring that night, as did Foster to some extent, he was never the same afterwards.

Foster said afterwards that Finnegan was one of his toughest opponents. Incredibly, just 6 weeks after the Foster fight Finnegan was back in the ring, having been ordered to defend his European title. He did beat Mike Quarry later on, and had a couple of wars with John Conteh, who butted him to bits. I think he'd hold a title today, he was just unfortunate to be around at the same time as someone like Foster.

I used to be a member of the same boxing gym that he once trained at (Hayes) and I remember they had a large picture of him on the wall. My grandad met him a couple of times and said that he was approachable and friendly. Excellent boxer, sorry to hear of his passing.

                RIP
