    Joe Louis vs. Max Baer

In his autobiography Joe Louis claims the best performance of his career was against Max Baer. He also mentioned that Baer, despite all his firepower, never really learned his trade as a boxer. You can see on the video that Louis is making him look bad.

Baer had a lot of talen and a deadly punch. Sadly he never took the fight game too seriously and training wasn't one of his main past times.. good fight though between two of my favourites. Thanks for posting.

Baer was just unskilled, and Louis took advantage. But I heard that Baer's hands were broken when tey fought, that's why Max couldn't really hurt Louis.

If you look closely you will see Jack Dempsey in Max Baer's corner. Although you can't hear it in the video, Dempsey was threatening to knockout Baer unless he started fighting! He tried to managed Baer's career, but Baer wasn't serious enough to effectively managed.

That's a fair statement. Joe Louis stopped Baer right after Max was upset by Braddock.....originally, it was suppossed to be for the championship.

I'd liken it to Ali's performance against Cleveland Williams. Joe was really on that night, he had to be....if he wasn't , Baer could have taken his head off.

I'm often torn between the Baer fight and the second Schmeling fight as to which Louis looked better. The Baer fight reveals more of his skill because it lasted longer; but the Schmeling fight was as intense as Louis ever was....it's a toss up.

I think he looked quicker in the Baer fight. Add to it the fact that the steel chinned Baer had better been dropped before and you have an incredible display of power and skill.

I think Louis in the Jack Sharkey fight was quicker than in the Baer fight.

I'll plus one to that, as I have always had that same opinion.
