Sam also whooped Jeannette for the world title the French stripped JJOHNSON of for not defending vs Joe or Sam. Sam never defended his title that is now forgotten.

This match would be interesting. Toney would have to come in light to go rounds with Langford... The fight may look like Marciano Moore... Archie had his moments, countering a "crude" Marciano, but as they say "Marciano's moments were cracking!"

What brought this about is I believe JT and Lang are the men with the most belts not recognized as major or legitimate titles at HW/CW. I'm including CW because it's not a thing in Sam's time and I just think it's interesting these two great MWs have so many larger than MW titles.
I was just looking to see who is the HW champion of some of these lesser known orgs and Toney comes up quiet often, so I checked CW and man he's there even more. WBF, WBU, IBU, IBA, IBO, and IBC.
Back in the day Langford was easily the king of the unter-belt. He's been crowned by french (FBF Jeanette 10) and british (NSC Hague) and of course his five time Colored HW crown. 1910, 1912, 1914, 1916, and 1917. And the Mexican title in 23.
I thought it was interesting.
15 rounds
1950's style ref
10 point must scoring
Super middle or light heavyweight 168-175 lbs
Indoor fight under AC
I'm going with Langford on points. He his very hard and was ultra tough. Skilled on offense. Toney did not like pressure, he's come in to counter but in the end Langford would out work him.
IMO Toney is a little over rated. I feel McCallum at age 35 edged him in the first fight. Roy Joes clowned him, he lost to Dave Tiberi in an all time robbery, and was very close in winning some of his other matches. The Nunn come from behind K was impressive, but there was no re-match, and Nunn was clearly the better boxer. Mix in some losses at light heavy to less than famous names and it is what it is.Marchegiano likes this.

So it would have to be a negative for Sam Langford too.
I wonder how come it took you a little while to get here, usually you're on to a Toney thread within the hour.billeau2 likes this.
