When and why did HW's switch over to 10oz gloves?

I was re-watching the Ali-Foreman fight and it was announced they were both fighting in 8oz gloves.

Was there something that caused the switch over to 10oz for the higher weight classes?

All weightclasses 147 & above are now 10 oz gloves but it doesn't really matter considering when I was a early teenager I used to box multiple friends back to back, with 14 & 16 oz gloves & had no idea til way later that pros use 8 or 10 oz gloves.(remember that the more gloves are padded(to a pt) the harder & more often a fighter can hit without breaking his hands,& if you fought bare knuckle you wouldn't do near the damage. Bottom line is Boxing is far more damaging than bare fist or semi bare fist but 10 oz gloves are unlikely to make a difference other than maybe causing more damage imho
