Is he underrated? I don't know much about his career pre Louis, but he only won the title on a DQ and lost it two fights later to to the same guy. I know Sharkey was one of the top guys of thaf era so no shame there

He would make a good trial horse for Marciano. The Schmeling version of Louis (I) might be Rocky's toughest opponent, for ten rounds or so.

I think he may be underated on here his loss to Sharkey is one of the great robberies in boxing.

Schmeling is one of the greats and should rightly be mentioned as such. Defeating Joe Louis is an achievement in itself obviously but he has other noteworthy victories, for instance Sharkley, Walker, Stribling... He had a pretty strong career, also resume wise. Other than that, he was a great human being.
