    Holyfield vs Toney

Holyfield at age 41 taking on former middleweight Champion James Toney age 36.. How much did either fighter have left? .. Evander a veteran of 46 fights, Toney a veteran of 70 fights.. Holyfield went on to fight for Heavyweight Titles on 2 more occasions, losing out on points.. Toney was having his first bout at Heavyweight and going on to fight a further 20 times.. What are your thoughts and opinions of when you first heard it announced it was going to happen?.. Your thoughts watching the fight?.. your thoughts and opinion of the aftermath?

My thoughts were Holyfield should be retired because he's clearly shot to ****.

I think evander at that stage even though he had less fights had been in more wars. I believe evanders amateur background was way more extensive.
Although evander touted himself as a boxer he did engage in many wars with some very large people. His first fight with dwight braxton was an absolute war evander moved up to heavyweight and Dwight was never the same. James although involved in many very good fights seldom took the punishment evander did. He was tough as nails but also very crafty nullifying his opponents offense.

I think Andrew definitely had the advantage over that version of Holyfield. Just an intelligent fighter with an all around skill set that would give anyone fits.

Evander had hardly anything left.. I don't think he was totally shot, but he wasn't a top 5 heavyweight anymore.. He could beat some guys, but he isn't beating any legit contenders or champs

Toney was probably having the most consistent run of his career.. He had a string of four or five fights that he looked very sharp in, which is rare for toney..

When the fight first got announced I was kinda miffed, because there had been talks about roy jones fighting evander, which would have been an insanely big fight..
But toney and Evander, as it got closer I got more hyped.. 2 of my old school favorites.

If I recall correctly, casamoyer vs Corrales fight was on the undercard, so it was a very solid PPv..

I thought evander would still have enough in the tank to outmuscle and outpoint toney in a close decision.. I thought if jirov was able to push toney around, holyfield when have no problem forcing toney to the ropes and pinning him,, and evander is smarter than jirov and wouldn't lay in there and smother his own punches and get carved up by toney's counters like jirov did.. That was my hunch going into the fight..

The fight was good for the first few rounds, but once evander slowed abit, toney blistered him with straight rights and body shots, and just totally broke evander down.. Pretty impressive performance by toney considering evander is nearly impossible to stop

I thought Toney had bitten off more than he could chew and was going to get knocked out, even if Evander was old. What actually ended up happening was a bit of a shock to me and turned out to be another beautiful performance by Toney.

Holyfield went on to beat Valuev in my opinion so he still must have had something left. Or maybe Valuev was just awful in an era of awful heavyweights.

But overall I was pleasantly surprised by what happened.

i was of the same opinion. I thought Holyfield would knock out Toney. Looking back i feel Toney would have knocked out Mike Tyson at the same time, Both Holyfield & Tyson were both on the slide, yet kudos has to go to James Toney who was himself years past his prime.

I think fighters such as tyson and holyfield with physical characteristics such as speed regress quicker than a cerebral fighter such as JT

Couldn't tell you, since I only knew about the fight after it happened. Stopped following boxing in the late '90s and didn't start again until about 2008. I would have probably picked Holyfield too. And yes, he was shot, but managed to fight until 2011, while Toney at 47, previously fought once last year, his first fight in 2 years and has another fight in 2 weeks. I'm hoping it turns out to be his last. Seems a lot of boxers keep fighting until they're in their early fifties.
