When did champions get to meet Presidents/Royalty etc ?

I mean like the last time, I do know Pacquiao had dinner with the English royalty last year. I've been watching a lot of docu's of the old greats lately and they pretty much all had photo-op with the current president of the US. I guess it shows you how big a deal it used to be to be the heavyweight champion of the world. I'm sure if an American(like Wilder)was unified champ he'd have public meetings with ***** for the press.

Was this when they were active and still champion, or much later on when retired?

No they were champions. Like for example Frazier got to meet Nixon after his FOTC win and brought his family along too.

I think Nixon just loved Boxing too though:

Ali, Patterson, Nixon. Only one of them ever quit.

Greatest heavyweight in MMA history, at least. Some say pound for pound greatest. If he were to go through with his comeback and clean out the heavyweight division in the UFC, there wouldn't be any doubt by anyone he's the best ever.

I seem to remember Marciano meeting Eisenhower when he was champ and later meeting Kennedy after his retirement.

I doubt that Ali met the president when he was a champion, he was always against the system and he was always exposing the racist white government of the time, plus his refusal to fight in the unjust Vietnam war for the benefit of his oppressors was something that didn't help his popularity with the system and people of power either.

Only when he couldn't walk or talk anymore they started calling him a hero and every president wanted to take a pic with him, and that's not cool. Ali was also a gold medalist and a heavyweight champ just like Frazier, yet I doubt it that he got the same treatment Frazier got from the people of power at the time.
