I also saw another good one from Baer a couple of days ago in regards to that fight, which somebody posted elsewhere...

    Apparently when he went back to the corner after one of the first couple of rounds, his corner was telling him what a great job he was doing avoiding Louis' shots...to which Baer responded something along the lines of;

"Well you better watch that ref then because somebody in this ring is beating the **** out of me."
"He aint laid a glove on me? Yeah? Well then you'd better keep an eye on that referee 'cause somebody out there is beatin' the hell out of me..."

        Baer-Schmeling fight clips

Joe Louis regarded Schmeling as a hard puncher but I have to take Louis on his word since I haven't seen enough of Schmeling to know.
I have 9 of the 10 rounds from the Baer-Schmeling bout on my site at:

You have to view it in Firefox Mozilla, I'm still working on getting IE to view the files and not download them.

        On page:

Louis says the following about Baer:
        >While training for his bout with Max Schmeling, their second meeting, Schmeling had nailed him to the floor in the first bout, Joe Louis was asked who he considered to be the best challenger for his title. He responded that "Baer is the best of the challengers. I'd rather fight Schmeling twice than Baer once. Baer's got a dangerous punch in both hands, Schmeling only has the one."<

Dempsey said that to Baer between rounds. Max (as well as many of Louis' opponents prior to stepping into the ring with him) asked Jack to second him, cuz he needed moral support, cuz Max had literally mind-****ed himself into a panic attack before walking into the ring.

Most likely from his mentor Dempsey, who taught Max the kinds of tricks he used to use.

this was a close fight up until the stoppage.

                    heres my scorecard

                    round 1: baer
                    round 2: baer
                    round 3: schmeling
                    round 4: schmeling
                    round 5: schmeling
                    round 6: Baer
                    round 7: schmeling
                    round 8: Even
                    round 9: Baer

my scorecard after 9 rounds read 4 rounds to 4 with 1 even

baer clowned a lot and got lazy in the mid rounds, and schmeling totally outboxed him. baer looked great though, defintley his peak fight. schmeling got in good licks and counterpunches very well in the mid rounds as he outboxed baer. but baer displayed his finest counterpunching of his career in this fight. baer displayed far better defense in the schmeling fight and was much more composed than in any other fight.
                    - -Baer a physical livewire bum rushed into boxing because of his size and athletic talents.

After being accused of a ring death, whatever motivated him in the beginning was gone forever.

I think that's a lot of it. I also believe even more so, like a McGregor, as a star he was more interested in being famous than the sport that made him famous.

Loughran and others tried to work with Baer, but he just didn't have the focus or aptitude for proper Boxing.

But think what he'd be today if he stayed the course... that would be ove TERRIFYING Cruiserweight.
