There have been several but for financial reasons they came back. Joe Louis for example. Most of the greats kept fighting and did not want to retire just to preserve their record. Eventually they lost but their legacy was secure even though they went on taking risks.

Most agree MW is current #1 P4P by default. The general quality is that low. A fighter who will not fight like a champ should never be #1. It is very telling that he has been current P4P for many years and is way down the all time lists by those with knowledge. That says something. In the golden era he still has a chance to make the HOF, I guess. A lot of his contemporaries who make it now would not get in at all.

One for the ages is how he became the leading money maker today. Again, only possible now when there are no great stars to steal the public's awe. A savvy aggressor like Robinson in today's game would snatch the mantle of money king from MW's noggin after a few fights. No need to even unstraighten his hair and put a baseball cap on backwards for such a task.

Louis wasn't undefeated. He lost to Schmeling earlier in his career.

Years ago there was no where near the attention about a p4p fighter like today. At the end of the year a "best performer" of the year would be picked and that took care of that. Also everyone knew Robinson was the best
ever (TBE) so picking a top ten these years just shows that the current generation is guilty of the same thing they say about the older generation.
They both think their era's are superior to each others.
I think the best from boxings history is in the late 30s through the 50's and then again from the mid 60's into the mid 70's! After that theres fewer and fewer great fighters.

Was Louis ever ranked P4P No.1? He had a loss, via KO, before he even became champion and long before he had the chance of being ranked P4P No.1. So no comparison.
