    Sonny Liston Defense

How good was Sonny Liston Defense, such as parrying, blocking and slipping shots. I only seen the Ali fight and he has a good jab and was slipping a number of Ali's punches though he didn't counter enough. What was his defense on a scale 1-10 and is he underrated defensively.

By the time he was champ he was a seasoned veteran and knew defensive tricks but when you are a great puncher you don't need to be as defensive because the term "A strong offense is a good defense" applies to boxing as well.

He would never be confused with Ali or Jimmy Young but he didn't walk in to punches either.

It seems fair to say that Liston was a competent defensive fighter. He looked easy to hit against Ali, but not so much before that. You also have to factor in that once his opponent tasted Sonny's power, they weren't exactly charging forward with sizzling combinations anymore. Chris Byrd and Jimmy Young didn't have that luxury.

If you watch his fights pretitle he had a pretty good defense.

Better then forman's worse then Frazier I think but like another poster said his power was so big that nobody was gonna try to much not to mention he was strong as hell and could close about any distance with reach and sledge hammer jab.
