Marciano was certainly no phenom, as he was the underdog in quite a few of his fights coming up and recieved his share of bad press during those development years, as well.

True. Marciano was considered, too short, too slow, too awkward. I remember Walcott said something to the effect of, "If I lose to this guy take my name out of the record books."

By the time he got to Walcott he had many fights and had proved to most that he was champion material. That and the fact that Walcott was an older guy near the end of his career. Marciano was young, very strong, had a great chin and a knockout punch with both hands. They figured he'd catch Walcott eventually. No one expected Walcott to move and fight as well as he did.

Mike Tyson everybody thought would win the title, umm Rocky was favored only later in his career in the beginning they figured its great he's got good suzie q but thats only gunna carry him so far, but he developed a defense and alittle more agility.
i'm not sure about any others

This assesment was at the beginning of his career. Not at the time he fought Walcott.
