    Bobo Olsen

What do you think of this former mw champ? He did seem to have problems with Ray Robinson but this was before Ray really Faded. My personal thoughts are that he was very good but not great fighter that gave his all in his fights.

Olsen was what i would call a very good fighter, certainly not one of the greats though. Olsen is one of those very tough and talented guys who was in the right place at the right time and got a belt but was overshadowed by several fighters, Dave Sands would have to rate as a guy who was in just a higher class than an Olsen, we will never know just how good Sands was but we do know at least that the word awesome fitted perfectcly, Sands was so good I believe he may even be the second best Aussie in ring history. No one in boxing was surprised Robinson was too good for Olsen, and I mean nobody, not even Olsen himself I bet. ---------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------- No one can take Olsen's title from him, he deserved the success he had, and had the bumps to prove it. I find it very hard to dislike any fighter from the mega tough 1950's, to me the 50's was the end of the true iron men in boxing, by that I do not for one second suggest that there have been no iron men since but I do believe that they are far fewer since then, what I mean is that the majority of boxers then fitted into the iron man class where nowadays the average top guys prefer to move out of the way and avoid most. Back in the 50's they crowds bayed for blood and were very unforgiving, as a top pro, to stay a box office draw you had to be a gladiator. Even Sugar Ray is a true hardman of iron, he may have been very pretty to watch but Ray just LOVED to get in there and SLUG, and his chin rarely ever gets a mention but I believe he had one of the all time great chins, even though he was one of the hardest guys to hit clean that ever stepped in the ring the fact is that Ray took MANY bombs in his career and indeed he copped more in two fights from Basilio than Mayweather has copped since he was a 6 years old, yet old Ray stayed on his feet for all 30 rounds.

Yeah fans wanted exciting, bloody fights. Reminds me of that Simpsons episode where Mr. Burns says something like if a fight went less than 30 rounds "you demanded your nickel back."

Yep, that is how it was allright, it just drives me nuts when so many fans these days can even imagine their favorite fighters are as good as the old timers and I have seen so many outrageous comments. I simply cannot imagine Mayweather being dominant back then, they guy has never even been tested, I have even seen guys claiming Mayweather could have beaten some of the great middleweights yet I seriously doubt he would beat any of the great middleweights. Comparing Mayweather to guys his own size is of course fine. The talent pool just doesn't exist like it used to, to forge a great sword you must stick it inside the fire but the fire now is just luke warm. One thing for sure if Mayweather was born in La Mottas time he would lose some fights (take Tony DeMarco for instance, not as quick or skillfull as Floyd but lets face it, one left hook connects from DeMarco and almost every welterweight to ever live is out cold, so just one mistake and Floyd is gone). despite Floyd getting the odd loss back then he sure would be a tougher and better fighter than he ever needs to be now.

I live in Hawaii, where Bobo Olsen is from. I'm a housepainter and I did alot of painting for the family of the man who was Olsen's Trainer and Manager, Sad Sam Ichinose. Sam's son was the trainer of Andy Ganigan, a great jr.welterweight contender. Sad Sam Ichinose actually put a promotion together to try and get Muhammad Ali vs Berbick to be held in Honolulu. But it fell through.
