    The Fullmer brothers

I knew of Gene from his great fights with sugar ray but I did not realize he had a brother Don who was a middleweight title challenger and another brother who fought at lightweight.

Don wasn't a bad fighter. Jay got knocked out by Joe Miceli and, in return, Gene smashed Miceli. Don died, I'm almost positive of that, but I think Jay is still living. I know Gene is still alive.
For years they ran a gym in West Jordan, Utah, their home town. In 2011 I was in Salt lake City for a surgery, but I had 3 days to kill. I hung around that gym for hours (it was in the back of a fire station, next to a cemetery)because i would kill you to meet gene fullmer. After two evenings of this, a firefighter asked me why I was lurking around their building. And I learned that the gym had been closed and relocated; they just hadn't moved their stuff yet.

I remember Don Fullmer as a solid but unspectacular contender who didn't always win but usually went the distance. When I reviewed his record I was surprised to see that at his peak he had wins over Emile Griffith, Joey Archer, and Jimmy Ellis.

I remember doing a RIP thread when Don Fullmer passed away at the beginning of 2012.

Fullmer was the brother of former world middleweight champion Gene Fullmer. He fought in 79 matches, losing to such former champions as **** Tiger, Jose Torres, Joey Archer and Emile Griffith during a career that spanned from 1957 to 1973.

He defeated Jimmy Ellis(future hea. champ), Bobo Olsen, and Griffith and Archer in rematches before losing to Nino Benvenuti in 1966.

In a 1968 rematch with Benvenuti for the middleweight title, Fullmer knocked the Italian down but lost a 15-round unanimous decision.

Both good fighters. Gene more so that Don of course but Don was a good fighter also.

Gene Fullmer's final fight with **** Tiger was a viscous beat down. And the only time he was stopped other than the fight with Ray Robinson.

          He was incredibly tough.

Conditioning conditioning conditioning..........thats the Fulmer way!
I remember Sugar Ray saying that they didn't hit especially hard, were not fast in anyway but if you didn't come to meet them in tip top shape you could get beat!!! Fighters with hearts & souls!! Ray.
