I was wondering if anyone could think of fights where the backgrounds, upbringing of fighters were used to promote the fight. An example of what I mean is the Sugar Ray v Hagler promotions which contrasted the fighters backgrounds. Im writing an essay about class in boxing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Barrera and Morales is exactly what you're looking for! Watch all the promo stuff. They talked a lot of trash about it.

Frazier and Ali is another one. It wasn't really like economic classes with them, though, it was more "who was blacker." Which was weird, but hey, Ali made it work for him. He was just kind of a ****.

In terms of race, didn't the same thing happen with the buildup of some of De La Hoya's fights, especially with Trinidad, Vargas, Mayorga and possibly Chavez? Oscar was more upper middle class when he started out, so a lot of other fighters and even fans said he wasn't really a fighter or true warrior in the ring. Then again, neither were guys like Leonard or Mayweather and that finesse style worked for them.
