    Holmes-Spinks II.

I recently watched this fight on Youtube recently, and like most of you, I thought Holmes won the fight. But, that's not what this thread is about. It's about the fact that Holmes could have knocked Spinks out in the 14th round, but he just kept letting Spinks get away from him! I remember yelling, "HIT HIM, DUMBASS!" at the computer. Why in the HELL didn't Holmes go after Spinks?!

He was near completely drained and Spinks was landing some nasty shots on him all that round, used the time Spinks used getting away as a short rest probably, didn't look like he had in him what was needed to take Spinks out at that point.

Additionly he probably thought the bout was already his. So often we hear in the corner between rounds, the corner telling a fighter not to take chances when they are comfortably ahead in a bout and there is only a couple rounds left. I bet if Holmes knew what the judges were about to do to him, he would have approached it differently.

this happens so often an example that comes to mind is angie dundee exhorting ray leonard on against hagler while marvins corner was quoting gil clancey were going through the motions as is they were at an Ibm meeting.

Bad fight, bad decision. You'd have to pay me to watch it again.

Holmes didnt win that fight on my scorecard. I had it either 8 rounds to 7 for Spinks or 9 rounds to 6 for Spinks.
After the 5th or 6th round of this fight, Spinks basically won every single round

But maybe he should've approached it differently anyway, since he didn't get the decision the first time either and he thought he was screwed by the judges the first time around. I remember hearing Emanuel Stewart talking about telling Lennox Lewis to pick up the pace in the first fight with Holyfield because he didn't like the looks on the faces and body language of the judges. I guess you never really know with judges sometimes, which is unfortunate.

The problem is that it was a 36 year old Holmes in round 14 of a fight he simply started too quickly. The work and pace he put into rounds 1-6 will have taken its toll later on.

Theres no two ways about it; Holmes was in super shape that night, but his pacing wasn't very good. Holmes may well have deserved the decision by a whisker but I doubt that he'd have been strong enough to stop Spinks in round 14.

I had twenty people in my house that night that scored the fight on private scorecards. When we gathered the cards with mine included it was 20-1 for Holmes. The one that scored the fight for Spinks had made a 50 dollar bet on Spinks before the fight. But judging is subjective I admit, you were just at a different house.

if you tell me which rounds Larry Holmes won after the 6th round (in your opinion), I will gladly re-watch them. Cause after the 6th round Holmes only won 1 round or 2 at the most.
