I don't think so, winning titles against good opponents at 154 and 160 boosted his legacy without a doubt and even his losing performance against the likes of Hagler boosted his legacy and made him more of a legend.
Just not quitting in such a fashion in Leonard II would have been nice, regardless of the eventual outcome.

I get the impression in ray arcels book that he does not agree with us.
he thourghly thrashed cuevas in exciting fight, destroyed davey moore, had an exciting loss to robbie sims and beat barkly for the middleweight title in the fight of the year. I still would have liked him to have had shot at the jr welter title in early 79.

also not getting into the ring with hearns in the weaken condition the book states he was in. Better preration would have at least given us a longer fight with tommy taking a few from roberto.

Duran's fate was sealed before the fight began.

Im inclined to think his legend only grew though. Taking on bigger and better fighters winning titles at 154 and 160, going 15 injured vs the baddest 160lb man in the world, outpointing Iran the Blade Barkley, beating the snot out of Davey Moore and conducting buisness (as in winning fights), in FIVE decades - the only man to do so. (Mamby never WON fights in every decade he only Fought)
He was always gonna be a fighter for as long as he could though. You hear fighters today say i want out by the time im 30, even 27 and ****. Not Duran he said he'd still be fighting at 45 and he went beyond even that! He loved to fight, he was a fighter! Plus him and Mrs Duran knew how to spend them some money!

it probably would've been icing on the cake if he did retire, but not only added to the legend, in essence, he overachieved.

You don't understand he trained to make weight (whatever it was) then try to sharpen up a bit but he didn't train to prepare for who he was fighting he just went in the ring and fought! Thats why it wasn't him at his best! He was 135lb champ and could fight some at 147 but not perlonged! He's not known as a great WW or Middle or anything else but a Lightweight Champion! He was a terrific boxer at that weight and became ordinary at the other classes.
He grew into being a Lightweight then grew out of it but into a higher weight great fighter, it didn't work like that for him.
He continued on when his people told him not to. He took the money, then blew it all and wound up right back on his front porch in Panama where he was after the first Leonard fight. He did what he wanted to but to call what he did great is nonsence just look at the film and tell me its the same fighter at 135 and 162??? Really!! He brought his name it was legendary but his name couldn't get out of the way of punches his eyes saw but nothing moved!!! Personally it hurt me to see him like that, to me it was Joe Louis fighting Rocky way past his prime!! A total waste other than the money! Ray
