I agree with what you stated

On the topic of defense what do you think gives Pernell the edge?

Do you think its the way he controlled distance/footwork?

            Better instincts.

Technically, McCallum had all the moves, but not the reflexes to get out of the way of quick punches. He could be hit, while sometimes it seemed impossible to even touch Whitaker.

              True.
Both Toney and Curry had a lot of success with their right crosses

I've only watched about 5-6 of his fights. So far I've seen:
DLH, Tito, Nelson, Chavez, Mayweather and Rameriz II

Which was the best offensive minded opponent he faced, in your opinion?

Chavez but he did not get a whole lot done against Whitaker. Nelson was great also but at lower weights. Trinidad was a force at welterweight because of his size and power but Whitaker was no longer the fighter he used to be by then.

Whitaker's fights with Buddy McGirt and Greg Haugen are worth a watch too.

                    Jab - not sure
                    Defense - p
                    Offense - bodysnatcher
                    Footwork - p

But overall I would say Mccallum was slightly better.
